Dozens of “Save the A” signs were placed in front of the house of Dr. Ricardo Azziz, Georgia Health Sciences University’s president, Tuesday morning.

The signs were placed in the public right-of-way between the sidewalk and street on Milledge Road, where the university president’s house is.

Christen Carter, a GHSU spokeswoman, said Azziz left his house shortly after 6 a.m. and returned an hour later to find the signs. He called GHSU public safety, and the signs were immediately removed, she said.

Save the A is a campaign by a group pushing to replace Georgia Regents University with University of Augusta as the name for the consolidated Augusta State and Georgia Health Sciences universities.

Carter said it is unclear who has jurisdiction over the front of the property — Richmond County or the university since it is a state-owned property. The university previously performed maintenance work in the sidewalk area so the school’s public safety removed the signs, she said.

Carter said the university did not pursue whether charges could be made against those who put up the signs.

Removing the signs was also keeping with GHSU policy that says no political campaign or advertising signs may be placed on campus or any of the university’s state properties, she said.

“We won’t press any charges and did take the signs down in keeping with policies for all of our state properties,” Carter said.

Azziz will not issue an official comment on the incident, Carter said.

Calls to a Save the A spokesman were not returned Tuesday.

Destroyed? Doubtful

I put money on it that MCG public safety removed the signs and then immediately passed them out to MCG employees who were looking to put them in their yards.

The name is the surface issue. MCG and ASU employees will be in full blown revolt once the cuts kick in.

Thanks, galaxy girl. I am glad I could.

And insider, I had the very same thought. I just thought I had posted enough. I don't like to drown people with too much information to think about.

In that case

Wonder what the going rate was on a sign that had resided for the short time in front of the Azziz residence. If they were given away, somebody missed a golden opportunity.

I wonder

I wonder if there will be a " save Azziz" campaign in the near future? There must be someone out there that supports his way of doing things. I've yet to meet any but there HAS to be someone out there.

And his support would come

And his support would come from where? Some from sheer attraction and appreciation of their increased income?

@ KSL

Azziz has the full support of the SMA (Sign-Makers of Augusta).

The SMA has nicknamed Azziz "The One-Man Stimulus."

At least the SMA won't be

At least the SMA won't be going bankrupt any time soon. They can easily claim they are better off than they were 4 years ago, with a rosy, bright future out there in front of them.

Correction

The complete story should have been, "he left his house in his chauffeur-driven state-owned car" . . .

HaHa

He probably had a temper tantrum in his house and then walked out with that quirky little smug look on his face. Hes a lost cause and should be removed from office.

Just an early Halloween

Just an early Halloween prank. Guess the resident didn't want to give anyone a treat.
Also, by the spokesperson's statement of " the University recently performed maintenance in the sidewalk area" does that mean they mowed the grass?
While the area between a sidewalk and curb is not the 'property owner's property it is still to be maintained by them. Why make a statement about mowing the grass sound like it was such a big deal and why call the 'security police' to remove the signs? Guess the regular maintenance workers don't come to work before 8AM and by the time they could get there that would have left the signs out for too many too see.

Fingerprints

The police dusted all the signs for fingerprints. If any of them are in the system, they'll be making an arrest. If the fingerprints are not in the system they'll wait until the sign placers get accepted into medical, dental, or nursing school (where you have to be fingerprinted). If they find matches between the sign fingerprints and the students' fingerprints, they're history.

That's Nice

Azziz was mad - thaaat's nice! However, Azziz is just a pompus puppet. I wish the signs could be put in the puppet master's yard - Chancellor Huckelberry Hound.

Even the Augusta Magazine Poked Fun at Azziz

Azziz needs to be reminded at every look, hear, smell, taste and touch that "Save-The-A" is not a passing fad, as he expected it would be. Even the Augusta Magazine Best of 2012 poked fun at him 3X, citing the name change the top story, satirizing, what's in a name and another reference. I'll quote chapter and verse in another post.

Who "defiled" his property? Probably some spirited ASU undergrads. He will need to learn that unlike his experiences in California and at MCG, freshmen and sophomore students think differently, just a little less serious, than graduate students. Expect a few Halloween pranks at his house and office.

His life and that of his family cannot be as carefree as before; a little discomfort never hurt anybody!

Bully ...

Bully for the sign planters; the signs were so well organized and neat. Good show. No property damaged, only someone's psyche.

3 Augusta Magazine Best of 2012 Merger References

The October 2012 Augusta Magazine Best of 2012 article sarcastically poked fun at our humorless King:

Page 42 - Men's Clothes - Some people announce the winner "Joe-Zay Bank." Looking at the spelling, we can understand, but it's actually pronounced "Joseph A. Bank." But as Dr. Azziz says, a name is a little thing.

Page 47 - Local News Story - This one was so easy a regent could have figured it out: the hornet's nest of the ASU/MCG/GHSU/GRU consolidation and all the game-changing, name-changing repercussions that came along with it. Hooda thunk?

Page 53 - Hot Local Issue - This is almost laughable. The winner, elected into office during summertime voting, was the ASU/GHSU merger. The merger! Voters thought that was the hottest local issue. Little did they know the firestorm that would erupt over the name.

This Augusta Magazine has legs, long lasting stamina, just like the Save-The-A initiative.
