'Save The A' signs line road in front of GHSU president's house

Dozens of “Save the A” signs were placed in front of the house of Dr. Ricardo Azziz, Georgia Health Sciences University’s president, Tuesday morning.

The signs were placed in the public right-of-way between the sidewalk and street on Milledge Road, where the university president’s house is.

Christen Carter, a GHSU spokeswoman, said Azziz left his house shortly after 6 a.m. and returned an hour later to find the signs. He called GHSU public safety, and the signs were immediately removed, she said.

Save the A is a campaign by a group pushing to replace Georgia Regents University with University of Augusta as the name for the consolidated Augusta State and Georgia Health Sciences universities.

Carter said it is unclear who has jurisdiction over the front of the property — Richmond County or the university since it is a state-owned property. The university previously performed maintenance work in the sidewalk area so the school’s public safety removed the signs, she said.

Carter said the university did not pursue whether charges could be made against those who put up the signs.

Removing the signs was also keeping with GHSU policy that says no political campaign or advertising signs may be placed on campus or any of the university’s state properties, she said.

“We won’t press any charges and did take the signs down in keeping with policies for all of our state properties,” Carter said.

Azziz will not issue an official comment on the incident, Carter said.

Calls to a Save the A spokesman were not returned Tuesday.

Gotta Love It!!

But we know that it didn't phase that hard head. He has no allegiance to the community. His only allegiance is to himself!! I would hate to have a reputation like that!

Save His "A"

Dr. A has never been very astute with good practices for fiscal responsibility. He missed the perfect opportunity to repurpose these signs for his own campaign.

Does he think

The A is for Azziz? He's so egotistical I wonder if he does.

You folks honestly think that people in Atlanta and elsewhere in the state will be happy for their state medical college to be named "the University of Augusta"? Seriously?

What are you smoking?

As for "allegiance to the community", GHSU's community is the entire state. That's why it has the word "Georgia" in the title. Students come form all over. And they don't want their diploma to say "University of Augusta".

I wouldn't have done that

Now you have made him mad and he will never concede even if he was thinking about it before. You have started a war and no one will win.

Talk about lazy.

He couldn't remove the signs himself?

And to call the police?

What was the crime?

Charges???

There are no "charges" for Azziz to press. The signs were on the city right of way, not state property. Therefore no university sign policy was violated.

Not smart

This was not smart on behalf of the Save The A committee / members. They need to stay in a 'positive' mode of operations.

He Got the Message

Look this guy got the message and you can bet it got under his skin but he is smart enough not to let anyone know it. He probably had a temper tantrum in his house and then walked out with that quirky little smug look on his face. His days in this town are numbered. We know it and He knows it. Hopefully it won't be long before we see the UHaul truck at his house ready to roll away.

Later this month the committee can organize a bunch of tricker treaters to knock on his door wearing Save the A tee shirts.

Oh, seriously? Do you really

Oh, seriously? Do you really believe the citizenry and businessmen of the "Save the A" campaign placed these signs at the University President's State residence? (Remember, this is not his house; he is a guest of the taxpayers.) Much more likely to be a GRU student prank.

Isn't it illegal for political campaign signs to be placed on a right of way? Does not the same law apply in this situation?

You'd have to check each

You'd have to check each county for their sign ordinances. Either way, you'd find that it is not being enforced unless you are a dancing sign in North Augusta; then you'd be in some serious trouble.

This gives me a great idea. I may attend GRU's Monster Bash as a dancing "Save the A" sign. Well, they did say to wear a costume.

Riddle me this Batman...

It is against "policy" to have campaign signs on state property, but it is not against "policy" for Azziz to use state property (i.e. state car, state office, state utilities, state staff, etc.) on state time to campaign for a name change?

Too bad they didn't put the up across the street

That's not state property and Himself the Azziz couldn't have done a thing--except look at the every time he walked out the door.

Now that would have been much more clever!

You have to admit, this is pretty funny. To call the police shows his "greater than thou" attitude.

And the ASU guy says they wont press charges. Who you gonna charge? Ghostbusters! LOL

I agree the Save the A campaign needs to stay focused, but still, this was cute. At least they didnt TP Azziz's castle.

Has anyone else thought it

Has anyone else thought it odd that a picture of these placed signs was taken.....and who took the picture and when was it taken?? If they were placed between 6 and 7 a.m., did the MCG police take the picture, or Azziz? If so, why would they have offered the picture to the paper? Or is this picture of somewhere else, and not in front of Azziz's house? Well, anyway.....

To Sarah's Mom:

Be sure you get permission from the property owner across the street before placing signs. Technically the signs aren't supposed to be in city right of way, but the city does not remove signs in the right of way unless there is a complaint called in.

Of course, Azziz would probably tell his secretary to complain if he had to look at them. You can move them back in the yard ten feet from the street (with owner's permission) and Azziz's complaints will just be hot air.

Unpublished

I was wondering when a protest of some form was going to happen at the Azziz residence. It couldn't have come at a more opportune time. More than a month or so since the whole thing was blown up and Azziz feeling pretty confident the whole thing is going to blow over and Augustans will go back to life as normal. This was not the plan. I hope he has to call the cops a few more times. Maybe the sign people can catch him during a dinner party.

This guy just doesn't get us at all.

I suspect he thought he was some kind of medical missionary heading for the boonies to save the primitives from their ignorance and drag us into the big time for our own good and his glory. And he probably thinks this is just the kicking and screaming of fractious children.

I think he really doesn't have a clue what he's done or who he's done it to.
