Columbia County school Superintendent Charles Nagle will retire at the end of this school year.

The 14-person committee includes all five Columbia County Board of Education members, who each named a community representative. Incoming District 1 school board member David Dekle also will serve on the committee.

The school board also decided to add principals from elementary, middle and high schools.

In addition to school board members Regina Buccafusco, Mike Sleeper, Wayne Bridges, Kristi Baker and Roxanne Whitaker, the panel consists of Dekle, Columbia County Administrator Scott Johnson, Carl Bethune, Robert Bissell, Beth Fritts, Gary Holley, Evans Elementary School Principal Naesha Parks, Stallings Island Middle School Principal Don Putnam and Harlem High School Principal Dietmar Perez.

As of Monday, six candidates had applied to replace Charles Nagle, school board attorney Pete Fletcher said.

Nagle announced in July that he would retire after the 2012-13 school year.

While the board of education will be responsible for interviewing candidates, the other committee members will review candidate applications and pass along their recommendations, Fletcher said.

“They have a right to look at those applications and evaluate them for you, and using those results help y’all narrow them down,” he said. “That’s what their primary role will be.”

Applications will be accepted through Oct. 17. The board hopes to name a finalist by mid-December.

The committee’s next scheduled meeting is Oct. 11, when members will discuss interview questions and a rating method for candidates.

Afterward, the school board held its regular bi-monthly meeting.

Nagle announced that high school graduation will be May 25.

School officials are looking at adding more time between commencements to eliminate traffic problems and creating a more uniform format for ceremonies.

Folks, there's good news in

Folks, there's good news in this if you're the type that wants to know everything that's going on....Mike Sleeper is on this committee. That means that he'll blab EVERYTHING and we'll hear about it the next day on the radio! Sleeper has proven that he can't keep his mouth shut, so I guess they're not concerned about confidentiality.

Mike Sleeper does talk a lot,

Mike Sleeper does talk a lot, but I don't see that as a bad thing. I've criticized him a lot in the past when I felt he was wrong about things. I think he actually became a follower my Chronicle comments to check on what I'd said bad about him. Heh.

But, I have to say he generally has good common sense and is very responsive to everyone. I once emailed him with a question and figured I may get an answer in a week or so like with most politicians. He responded in 15 minutes from his phone. A very responsive public official whether you agree with his stance or not all the time.

Implication?

Does Mr. Sleeper have trust issues? Sounds like it to me.

River, gotta disagree with

River, gotta disagree with you to a point. It is NOT a good thing when an elected official openly discusses school personnel issues with members of the press....just because the microphone isn't "on", doesn't mean it won't be broadcast eventually. And as far as him having good sense, well maybe. I just know he has been involved in a couple of well-documented "witch hunts" and been responsible for having innocent people fired when it was proven later that they were innocent. In other words, he wanted to show the public that Mike Sleeper would do something about the situation, come hell or high-water. But that's the past. I just think he needs to keep his mouth shut and stay away from the media more....and I don't think he can do that.
