Columbia County school zones to shift; public input sought tonight

  • Follow Education

The Columbia County school board got the first look Tuesday at new elementary school zones proposed for Evans and Martinez Elementary schools, and public rezoning hearing for parents to give input will be held at 6:30 p.m. this evening at Evans Elementary on Gibbs Road.

School officials unveiled a map at the school board meeting that showed half the pupil population at Bel Air Elementary School rezoned for Martinez Elementary, with the other half going to the new Evans Elementary set to open in August 2013.

The new 51-classroom school is projected to have 640 pupils when it opens, according to a presentation by Robert Jarrell, the assistant superintendent for student support.

“No students are being relocated from Evans Elementary or Martinez Elementary,” Jarrell said. “If they are attending those schools now, they will continue to attend those schools.”

All pupils currently attending Evans Elementary will move to the new school, which is expected to grow by 204 pupils.

Bel Air will close at the end of this school year, but the campus will be used by Martinez Elementary while its current building is razed. A new Martinez Elementary is scheduled to open in August 2014.

The new proposed school zone shows 212 pupils previously attending Bel Air moving to Martinez, where projections show the school’s total enrollment at 670 for the 2013-2014 school year.

“What we’ve done at this point is made an imaginary line from just east of the Moss Creek subdivision north to Owens Road at Marty Drive,” Jarrell said. “That’s a separation line.”

Those living to the east of that line will attend Martinez, while pupils to the west will go to Evans.

Just over 20 Greenbrier Elementary pupils living on Blanchard Road, south of Clark Drive to Hereford Farm Road, will be shifted to the new Evans Elementary to serve as a feeder school for Evans Middle and Evans High.

Martinez Elementary

Well, if they are going to raze and re-build Martinez, I hope they will build it two-story or three-story so they won't have to buy more real estate.
