Georgia Health Sciences University President Ricardo Azziz and Augusta State University Interim President Shirley Strum Kenny will hold town hall meetings Friday to provide updates about the consolidation of the two universities.

The first will be held at noon in the Lee Auditorium at GHSU and the second at 3 p.m. at ASU in the Maxwell Performing Arts Theatre. To watch the GHSU portion live or to submit a question beforehand, go to: asughsu.org/live-2#feedback

The forums, held about once a month, have become a way for students, faculty and the public to question the school leaders about issues such as tuition and parking and more contentious items such as the proposed name for the new university, Georgia Regents University.

My Question

Can the undergraduate school now known as ASU continue to be known as ASU under the umbrella name GRU? After all, there has to be a way to identify the various parts of the combined undergrad, grad and medical universities. Doesn't this way sound appropriate?

Letters on the Old Sears Building

When the Sears building was donated to MCG in the 90’s the name Sears was still on the bricks. They removed the lettering, but you could still see it. They tried several times using various methods and finally ended up with darkened traces of the letters where they used to be.

Are the GRU enforcers going to go around the ASU campus grinding out the name everywhere it exists? Will it be verboten to speak the name ASU? Will every document, pamphlet and paper with the name be burned in a big bonfire? Will the name ASU only be darkened traces on bricks like Sears?

Just wait...

If Tariq Azziz thought he received push back from Name-Gate, then just wait until he starts releasing details of the closed-door meetings about substantive changes he plans to make...

What changes you ask?

He and his sidekicks have been dropping clues about eliminating entire programs, raising admissions standards and combining staffs and departments.

When this information comes out, it is going to get quite interesting.

That's fairly old news, Insider

There are many people at MCG who don't know what department they actually are in at the moment.

A lot of the changes are happening before being very well thought out, which is making for lots of organizations and logistical chaos. Nobody knows who's paying for stuff any more or who is in their chain of command. The administrative assistants and office specialists are turning out to be some of the unsung heroes around here, because they're keeping everything running.

If the name has to be GRU..............

I like Riverman's idea. Just call the two schools ASU and Ricky's name GHSU. I still prefer MCG and will call it that. They will have to be differentiated in some form or fashion. And believe it the combination will NOT save any money!

Wouldn't you hate to be Axxix?

He is one of the most disliked people in town! I am sure all of his faculty and staff love him or at least they would tell you they did in order to keep their jobs.

Call the Governor!

It's not hard. They answer the phone, you tell them what you're calling for and they record your message to the Governor. More people need to take action and let Governor Deal know that spending our taxes on defending this stupid name in court is money down the drain.

Here's the contact info:

What Will Be the Next Series of Non-Transparent Transparencies?

Apparently the last ASU forum was not a comfortable affair for him. Back to the highly scripted forums of the past, “to submit a question beforehand, go to: asughsu.org/live-2#feedback.”

At that forum Azziz talked of the 75 consolidation committees formed. Those specific committee responsibilities and their charges have not been made readily available to the public. Many of them are probably associated with academic affairs, student services, business operations, development and alumni relations, curricula, degree programs, tuition, buildings and grounds, parking, housing, the sports program, marketing, etc. The consolidation is a complex process so these are all important areas for which the committee members have unique and valuable perspectives.

Yet Azziz has proven by action and words that he doesn’t trust, and worse, diminishes the findings of committees he has charged to recommend decisions. How many of those committee decisions have already been co-opted by his “vision”, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary? How clear and compelling could the evidence be that the new name, Georgia Regents University, was not a favorite, locally and nationally, with the public and educators and its selection even bore the risk of triggering a lawsuit?

Azziz talks of transparency, on the contrary, he practices deception with a practiced skill. As refined is his vision (though he’s got to admit to himself, not so much on the renaming), do the ends justify the means? Does abdicating integrity for feeding your ego speak well of the new U?

I think the renaming is behind us, as sad as that is to say (I made my calls, sent e-mails, mailed letters and submitted formal complaints per procedure). But Augusta, the real changes are to come, i.e. courses cancelled because the professors are fired because they deign to disagree, whole curricula changes based on some mysterious formula, student services upheaval. Asking what the findings of the committees won’t yield any substance, because those committee recommendations likely will not be followed, decisions instead made at the 9th hour to synch with his “vision”.

Azziz apparently operates with impunity, above the supervision of the Georgia Board of Regents and the management even of the Governor.

Ask yourself, what will be the next series of non-transparent transparencies?

I have been wondering what is going on myself. I too have done the calling, emailing, etc. So, what now? Still nothing as far as I know from Governor Deal's office. How many people does he have to hear from before he does something? I am tired of all of these folks..as I said, I hope everyone remembers all of these people come election time.

Submitted Forum Question

Just submitted this question at asughsu.org/live-2#feedback:

Whether real or perceived, the majority of the community's complaints on the renaming process has been about the lack of transparency, ignoring the majority opinion, the President's 9th hour choice that had not been vetted, wasting money, etc. At a time when this needless distraction and its negative consequences could better have been directed toward the new U branding and the consolidation of the institutions, what specific changes do you plan to make in your administration to regain the community trust and improve what has become your administration's very tarnished image?

Let's see what happens ...

Reason Azziz Operates With Impunity

Tullie asks to my observation that Azziz seems to operate with impunity, "I have been wondering what is going on myself."

I think I have an answer to that question, the Board of Regents is just a group of "Good Ol' Boys", so they operate as 1 unit. With the exception of 1 woman and 1 black male, the 16 other members are white males. William “Dink” H. NeSmith, Jr. represents the Augusta 10th District, and thank you very much, he was the sole dissenter on the Georgia Regents University name. We know that Azziz spent the state's money traveling to lobby the Regents prior to the August vote. Even with this lobbying effort, if the BOR were more diverse, Azziz might have found his sell more difficult. The BOR might have asked to see his research, the proof of why he thinks that was the best name, given him some flak, et. al.

The Demographics of the state in gender and race are much different than the BOR. The student population of the 35 educational institutions the BOR oversees are much different then the makeup of the BOR. Any way you look at it, the BOR does not represent Georgia. Governor Perdue appointed 17 Regents; Governor Deal didn't try to introduce any diversity, appointing another white male.

Azziz simply managed the BOR from his initial hiring, the name change from MCG to GHSU, the name change to GRU and who knows what else. It does not sound like he ever receives a "NO" answer. Governor Deal doesn't have any skin in the game because he has only appointed 1 Regent, but he is the Governor and needs to know the BOR makeup needs to change.

See my next comment, posted earlier, on a next step.

Upcoming Board Of Regents Public Meetings

http://www.usg.edu/regents/meetings

September - 2012 - NO REGULAR MEETING (Strategic Planning Session – Georgia College & State University
October 9-10, 2012 - University of Georgia - Athens, GA
November 13-14, 2012 - Board Room, Atlanta
December 2012 - NO MEETING (unless press of business requires it)

Arrange to be on the agenda at the October and November public portion of the meetings, assure the press is adequately represented, Augusta Chronicle, Atlanta Journal Constitution, TV, Radio (Austin Rhodes), The Daily Show, Colbert Report (to the last 2, all of the BOR and Azziz shenanigans plead for a satirical response).

Come with 5 simple questions (distribute to the press beforehand). The BOR will not answer the questions in October, therefore decline an e-mail or letter response, instead promise to return in November to receive their response (you want the press to hear their response, or likely non-response). Potential questions:

1. Please describe your renaming decision process that ignored the findings of the Consolidation Committees, the local public and political opinions, the $45,500 study and the warned legal action by Regent University in Virginia Beach, VA?

2. Considering the financial crisis the state is suffering, please describe your internal financial auditing process of the GHSU President's office, specifically in such discretionary spending as entertainment and travel?

3. Who is responsible for executive oversight of the GHSU President to maintain accountability?

4. Have you investigated the truth or fiction of the oft reported intimidation tactics and abuse of GHSU employees practiced by the GHSU President?

5. Can you please publish the already spent and projected future costs of the GHSU/ASU merger, to include but not be limited to, new signage, stationary, badges, promotional trinkets, marketing plan, travel, entertainment, consultants, litigation to fight the Regent University lawsuit?

Who will lead the caravan to Athens? And do all the prep work to make it an effective trip?

I'd like to know. . .

I'd like to know how it is possible that eight of the eighteen members of the USG Board of Regents are also either current or former members of the MCG/GHS Health System Board of directors. Cross-check the GHS HS BOD, and the BOR rosters, read all of the bios on both sites, and you'll notice quite a bit of overlap. Doesn't this seem like a gross conflict of interests, especially since they are supposed to be providing objective oversight to the entire USG?
