GHSU e-mails indicate Azziz opposed 'Augusta' in name of merged university

  • Follow Education

More than a month before the Georgia Board of Regents made its decision, internal e-mails indicate that Georgia Health Sciences University’s president wasn’t interested in including Augusta in the new school’s name.

According to internal e-mails acquired by The Augusta Chronicle, GHSU President Ricardo Azziz was steering members of the “Branding Team” responsible for name selection away from names associated with cities.

“Ask yourself (and your committee) how are other R1 universities named in GA and in the US (e.g. how many top 50 comprehensive Universities are named for their city if less than 1 million population)?” Azziz wrote to Susan Barcus in a June 19 e-mail. “Why was UGA named so and not Univ. of Athens? Or Ga State not University of Atlanta (in fact all universities with Atlanta in their name are small and access), or UNC not University of Chapel Hill?”

Barcus, GHSU’s senior vice president of Advancement and Community Relations, was co-chairwoman of the Branding Team that narrowed the 1,200 suggested names down to a list of six that were announced on June 15. Among the list were three that included Augusta in the name: Augusta University, University of Augusta and Augusta Arsenal University.

Those six names were tested in a series of telephone and online surveys by Kennesaw State University’s A.L. Burruss Institute of Public Service. GHSU paid $45,500 to the Burruss Institute to conduct a phone survey of 800 people nationally and 400 people in Georgia, and an Internet survey of 200 faculty members at other institutions.

Within a few days the Branding Team saw results from national surveys that indicated the “University of Augusta” name was polling strongest on the list. According to a June 18 e-mail from Terry Sloope, the assistant director for research with the Burruss Institute, University of Augusta and Augusta University were the only names in which a “majority of respondents” rated the name 4 or 5 on a scale in which 5 meant “liked very much.”

Azziz’s June 19 e-mail indicates he wasn’t enamored of names on the list.

“It isn’t true that your name doesn’t matter (witness the hoopla now) and that we make our own reputation,” he wrote. “You can deliberately make your name misleading and your road to broad relevance harder (witness the use of MCG, which made all med school alumni happy.... because it erroneously created the impression that the university was all about medicine... and nothing else).”

Within days, GHSU officials had sent the Burruss Institute an additional set of five names for polling, all of which included “Georgia.” On that list was Georgia Regents University.

THE NEW NAME appeared to be more in keeping with what Azziz had in mind. According to a June 21 e-mail to Barcus, Azziz wanted to ensure that the new name “works well with the health system… Georgia Regents Health System (GRHS) sounds ok. And abbreviates well (e.g. GRU).”

Despite polling that indicated it was less well received than three other titles that included the state – Georgia National University, Georgia Eastern University and Georgia United University – Georgia Regents University was picked for a second list of six names and then a final list of three sent to the Board of Regents for approval.

Dink NeSmith, the only regent to vote against Georgia Regents University, has said it was evident to him that Azziz favored that name in his presentations to regents before their Aug. 7 vote. NeSmith said Azziz thought the name had more “national and international potential.”

That aligns with the type of name Azziz said he wanted in his June 19 e-mail.

“Think big, comprehensive, and future-oriented. Most folk think small, only in their area of interest, and only into next year,” he wrote. “We need to be clear about what kind of institution we are intending to build (and so does the Governor, the Chancellor, and the BOR). What we do now will impact our future for generations to come.”

Another Question

Is taxpayer money paying for all the fancy caterings he keeps having at his house. One of the ASU falculty told me they had a huge fancy catering at his house as a meet and greet for GHSU and ASU members and he wasn't even there. Instead they were told he was on vacation.

To the Question of Power

Contrary to some comments this morning, we hold the ultimate power.

When SACS considers accrediting the new merged university, part of its consideration will be public comments and input.

We need to direct our comments to SACS and the SACS team that will be visiting Augusta.

Can you imagine a prominent medical school that isn't accredited? The BOR and Tariq Azziz would not allow that.

this is what?

45'000$ for a survey of 1200 people some math dept could figure out the cost of that Probably will need to pay a consultant to explain while you have a entire free class of students who could have done the polling for 45'000$ which would have been returned to the school in form of book payments etc students could have done the research
just the same as ????

Some kid on a playground or some elementary school teacher was very mean to young Azziz a long time ago, and now he's getting all the meanies back. Pathetic. Elitist scum.

Time for New Leadership

This entire fiasco reduces to one fundamental issue- integrity.

It is obvious in the way he has carried himself over the last several months, that the Augusta community and these two institutions deserve a leader with more integrity than Azziz. An organization that can’t trust their leaders to be ethical, honest and to advocate for their best interests; will not function properly. Given Azziz track record to date, it hard to imagine a point in time where this level of trust will once again exist. It is time we demand new leadership.

The students, employees and our community have entrusted the future of two local institutions with rich histories and of vital economic significance to Azziz. We have supported what on the surface appears to be a completely illogical decision to merge these two institutions without any substantial evidence of the costs & benefits or probability of success based in a large part upon trust in Azziz and the Board of Regents (BOR). I for one am no longer willing to place my trust in Azziz to represent our best interest in the consolidation process. It is time we demand new leadership.

President Reagan is quoted as having said “Trust, but verify.” We have trusted, now it is time to verify. I for one would like to see some real evidence concerning the likely costs & benefits of this particular consolidation. I would also like to see the members of the legislature, the governor and the BOR go on the record assuring our community that they will provide the massive amount of financial resources required to successfully merge these two institutions and transform them into a comprehensive research university. Given my current level of trust, excuse me for asking them to provide the particulars concerning the amount of funding they are willing to commit rather than some vague references of support.

“At the end of the day,” as Azziz is so fond of saying; we the students, employees and community will have to live with the consequences of our leaders’ decisions. We are being asked to place our trust in them and believe that they will be good stewards of our trust. Given the track record, I do not see how we can continue to place our trust in leaders that appear to lack integrity. For now, I believe we are wise to emphasize the verification part of Reagan’s quote until a time when we have new leadership we can once again trust.

where did this guy come from?

where did this guy come from? with a name like that it sure wasn't from around here..who does he think he is anyway changing the name of one of OUR TOWN'S (not his) most historic institutions? Who do the Board of Regents think they are working for? THEY WORK FOR US...I ask the fertile legal minds born here in Augusta to fight this. I am sure you can raise the money from locals. I am sure if pressure is put on this elitist board they will fold like a cheap tent.. It is obvious they have NO INTEGRITY anyway..The people on the Georgia Board of Regents are acting JUST LIKE the current democrat socialist party now controlling the country. They are acting imperialistic in their approach and the public will be damned...There was a day in my hometown where my fellow citizens would NEVER ALLOWED THIS TO HAPPEN..There has been a HUGE POLITICAL VACUM created since the untimely death of the former Majority Leader in the Ga Senate..Are there no men left in this town with the stones to fight this? For all you fellow Augustans who saddled up to this Medical College of Georgia President and kissed his rear end..you are what you are...

Geezzzz Azzizzz...

If the intention were to name the consolidated schools something with great branding and name recognition.. then why now University of Georgia-Augusta.. Makes SENSE.. It has "Augusta" in the name, but also has GEORGIA as well.. What makes 0 sense is naming it after the bored (meant to spell it this way) of Regents! Why wait the 29 years or whatever to build something that has ALREADY been built for over 200 years!! I don't have a degree and even I could figure that out! Geez Azziz.. what were you thinking???

Guy at church this morning

Guy at church this morning told me that Azziz has been rocked by this response...had no idea there'd be this much backlash! I told him what somebody here said..to state publicly that he would go to the BOR and request a change. This would work wonders for his image. The guy said Azziz wouldn't do it! He's too arrogant and full of himself! Dr. Azziz...if you're reading this, how does all this make you feel??

You're welcome, Palmetto, but I can't take credit. I think it was noxiousfumes who posted it about a week ago.

I looked at it and then went back and Googled it to find it later. It's a whole lot harder to find now on Google since so much about the naming fiasco shows up on page after page.

Azziz may be facing much

Azziz may be facing much bigger problems that the naming flap;

1. His penchant for a holistic medical institution freed from local or domestic political interference operates even with a divided, politicized Regents now just begging for more political intervention!! In fact, without that popular intervention, the state's entire public education system including Azziz institution might fall victim to a campaign pitting political and regional constituencies against one another far into the future; getting rid of "MCG," was an early but important indicator of how far the "other side" is willing to go to raid the store of alumni support and divert state resources elsewhere.

2. His idea, incredibly, offers "image" and "regard" somehow as more important than what the institution actually accomplishes; no one in the public need imagine he has addressed the real problems, and now is focusing on a minor concern like the name! His leadership, then, is in good stead with others in higher education who unknowingly put image before substance;

3. A world class medical university is one thing; but has Azziz any clue or concern over the state-wide failure of the medical community to grant access to many citizens? Will the grand new practitioners hope for wealthy "medical tourists" since GA residents increasingly cannot afford the gold-plated medical care offered by the "brightest and best" produced by the public medical school? Not Azziz' or the Regent's concern? Oh, really?

Let’s go National with the “GRU” Story

The debacle surrounding the renaming of our consolidated university has been picked up by the Associated Press and the Chronicle of Higher Education, and that gave me an Idea because the public outcry, concern and struggle over the renaming of our two distinguished centers of education does make for a good story.
The outpouring of community support for the Augusta brand is so heartwarming and touching, I believe it deserves to be publicized outside of Augusta and the state of Georgia. We have a real David and Goliath story unfolding here. I think that people from across the country will identify with our cause and support us when they learn about what’s happing here. National exposure for this story will demonstrate to Dr. Azziz and the BOR exactly how recognizable the city of Augusta is nationally and internationally.
We will prove, through the overwhelming support we receive from non-Augustans for the admonishment of Dr. Azziz and the BOR, that we are right in wanting to hold on to the name Augusta in the branding of our new consolidated university.
Of course the national publication of this mess with all of its gory details will prove to be rather embarrassing for Dr. Azziz and the BOR. Any national press about this controversy will serve to diminish and sour the proposed name “Georgia Regents University.” Let’s give Dr. Azziz and the BOR what they say they are looking for - national attention.
I’m willing to bet the rest of the country will find the name and the process just as deplorable and despicable as we Augustans do. The embarrassment that this national exposure will bring to Dr. Azziz and the BOR should hasten and necessitate a name change in our favor. After all, since Augusta’s not cool, maybe he’ll listen to the rest of the country. National attention might also help jumpstart some of our local politicians, who have been sitting idly by, and get them to act on our behalf.
I would urge the Augusta Chronicle and all Augustan’s to use whatever national press and media contacts available to help enact immediate change.

COC-SACS Principles of Accreditation

I was not buying the whole SACS approval angle until a little research resulted in finding the following information which may be interesting given recent events:

Page 5, Integrity

"The Commission on Colleges expects integrity to govern the operation of institutions. Therefore, evidence of intentionally withholding information, deliberately providing inaccurate information to the public, or failing to provide timely and accurate information to the Commission will be seen as the lack of a full commitment to integrity and may result in the loss of membership in the Commission on Colleges."

It is also likely that arguments could be made on a few of the standards (2.8, 2.11, 3.28, 3.7.1, 3.8.1, and 3.10.7) that the consolidated university does not have resources consistent with its mission as a comprehensive research university.

Perhaps some letters to SACS would help after all. Here is where I found the information if anyone is interested:

If I were this dude, I would want people to acknowlege me in public places with a hello and a handshake, not call me slurs and nasty names. It must suck to be the most hated person in Augusta, and know that that he brought it on himself.

Governor Deal

We all need to be calling the governor and emailing him about our disappointment in this matter. He as well as other governors have appointed this BOR and he needs to answer. Contact him now. Why isn't there a representative on the BOR from Augusta? The Board needs to be redesigned by legislation to not be political or weighted in favor of any particular school. 10 of the members are alum of UGA. I would cast votes to favor my school, wouldn't you? Let's get this board balanced and responsible to the community. Our local officials are afraid of the Governor pulling financial support from our community if we don't just move along. Our officials from the CSRA on the Georgia side need to band together to accomplish things for us and quit being intimidated by other parts of the state. We represent a lot of revenue for the state and shouldn't be taken lightly. They(CSRA reprsentatives) need to work together to make us a team that must be meet and worked with, not a bunch of small areas they can sweep aside.

The least we can do

The least we can do is to begin shopping in North Augusta after January. That way we can protest TSPLOST and Gru. Also, stop making contributions to MCG Foundation and ASU Foundation immediately. Soon they will merge into Gru Foundation. Don't even think about contributing to that!

Straight up lie.

Did he not think these emails would come out or that his deception of saying he didn't sway the Regents or Favor a Name would not be public? He has disrespected every person in this community and he needs to be fired and this debacle pulled back from the brink.
