Open forums on university consolidation Thursday at ASU and GHSU

  • Follow Education

Georgia Health Sciences University President Ricardo Azziz today will make his first public speaking appearance since the renaming of the merging GHSU and Augusta State University.

During two open forums, Azziz will be joined by ASU Interim President Shirley Strum Kenny to answer questions about the consolidation. They will likely face a crowd that’s critical of the new name – Georgia Regents University.

Students, faculty members and staffers of the universities, in addition to community members, are invited to attend by both schools. Similar forums were held in April and June.

ASU junior Chris Nabholz plans to attend. He’s curious to see how the crowd reacts to Azziz, who will lead the consolidated school.

Azziz has been a target of criticism since the University System of Georgia Board of Regents approved the Georgia Regents name, despite public opinion that largely favored the name University of Augusta or other options.

Nabholz described the student body as “dejected” and wants to shift the focus to student unity.

“Deep down inside, we know there is a hint of hope we can change it but we just haven’t seen enough big leaders come out,” he said.

Nabholz wants people to stand up against the Georgia Regents name at the forums, although he said reaction from students has had little or no influence so far.

Chris Blanco, an ASU senior and creator of a Facebook page titled “Everyone Against ‘Georgia Regents University’ Sound Off,” said he expects Azziz to defend the name. He said momentum is building toward a protest scheduled for Monday at ASU.

Azziz is counting on the "wear em down" tactics. Doesn't change the fact though, that he is clearly the most unpopular person in Augusta.

Ricardo "Tariq" Azziz is oblivious to the world outside his office. It will be interesting to see his reaction at the forums.

Has he disbanded the faculty senates yet?

Fascism the new business model

The last president and this one have a lot in common as far as leadership style. There way or the highway. Don't you really get the feeling that all the money spent, meetings, and manhours was just to make a forgone conclusion look kosher? Sadly intelligent people are often blinded by their own arrogance. Leadership is not being a dictator but is inspiring others and I'm not seeing it.

Just another politician

I went to the last forum that he and Dr. Bloodworth had at the ASU campus, and he was just another politician. He spent 15 minutes NOT answering a question, and he avoided anyone that he didn't want to hear a question from. I don't expect anything more from this one. He has a deaf ear to what others have to say, as do the BoR. They believe they are royalty and they know what is best for us lowly peasants...

Dr. Azziz, don't pretend this is a forum for you to hear from us...we all know this is just going to be another platform for us to hear from you only.

I suspect they will just wait us out

and ignore the matter as much as possible.

In fact, I will be shocked if these two forums are anything more than an attempt to pacify people and explain how foolish and futile further resistance is.

Azziz hasn't given the tiniest hint that he cares at all that Augusta and people beyond our area hate the name he has fallen in love with. I don't believe he is even slightly concerned about this uproar except as an annoying hassle to be dealt with and rid of as soon as possible. Same for the BOR.

We are, after all, the Great Unwashed of a provincial backwater who wouldn't know what was in our own best interest if it walked right across our faces.

Can I get an Amen?

Look at SACS

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) is coming later this semester for an accreditation visit. I think we need to bend SAC's ear explaining that the GRU leadership is definitely not a positive force in the community. Delaying the accreditation may be a way to buy more time.

Tullie, hit the GHSU webpage and search "map"

Then look at the legend for the building designations. Like BA is part of Talmadge Hospital. That may help you get oriented. It's kind of dead center of the campus and hard to find. There's no public parking anywhere very nearby either.

The quickest way to get there is to park in the 15th Street deck right in front of the hospital, go in the front, main entrance located behind the parking deck near where cars enter the deck. (Don't go to the west entrance across from where vehicles exit the deck or you'll wander forever.)

Walk in, go past the elevators, and turn right down the long corridor that runs the length of the main hospital. You will pass one corridor to the left that leads down to a back exit, but DO NOT go down that one.

Go to the LAST left hand turn that is a corridor and follow it straight down and out the back door onto an open walk way. Look for a gazebo and picnic tables on the right.

Keep going straight ahead and push the auto door activator button to go on into the Natalie and Lansing B. Lee Auditorium. It's nice looking on the inside.

Keep going, through one last set of doors. The large auditorium will be on your right. That's where you want to be, early.

Thank you Fiat_Lux

If ya'll don't hear from me again, you know I am wandering around MCG trying to find the auditorium or my way out...

Unless my husband goes with me, then it will be no problem. He was a cub scout :)

Wish I could be there

Busy studying for our licensing exam, but hoping for a good turnout! Tell them that their name sucks and doesn't represent anyone in the state of Georgia, much less the city that we live in!

I've now been in 3 different schools in 4 years (MCG, GHSU, and now GRU)!

My guess is the forum is not

My guess is the forum is not to benefit those in disagreement with the GRU name. It is designed to demonstrate some kind of hokey due-diligence process on the part of the administrator. Heck, they may even get some photos for p.r.. If they were clearly interested in addressing the issue and resolving things, they would do this "forum" thing at the protest on campus set for Monday.

Forums are nice, but meaningless...except for showing the numbers who are against this name change.

Pressure needs to stay on the Board of Regents and the Governor.

They are the ones who made the erroneous changes and they are the only ones that can make any revisions.

Futile Conversation w/Azziz

Take it to the legislature, Governor, and Regents. When they see how crooked Azziz is, they might wake up. #NameGate
