'Georgia Regents University' to be recommended to Regents

“Georgia Regents University” has been recommended as the name of the consolidated Augusta State and Georgia Health Sciences universities, according to the agenda for Tuesday’s Board of Regents meeting.

The “Recommended” item reads: “That the Board approve ‘Georgia Regents University’ as the new name for the consolidated institution of Augusta State University and Georgia Health Sciences University effective upon receiving both SACS (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools) and BOR (Board of Regents) approval of consolidation in January 2013.”

University System spokesman John Millsaps said Friday that the regents will not be bound by the recommendation when they vote Tuesday. In May, they crafted a name for another merged school that was different from what that committee proposed.

“Just because we have a recommendation doesn’t mean that’s the name until the board actually says so,” he said.

Georgia Regents University was one of three final names selected by a committee overseeing the merger. Georgia Arts and Sciences University and University of Augusta are the other finalists.

A committee of faculty, administrators, students, alumni and community leaders have been debating the names since January. Many boosters wanted the name to reflect the city. Readers of The Augusta Chronicle voted overwhelmingly in an online poll for the University of Augusta.

There is already a Regent University in Virginia Beach, Va. It was founded in 1978 by the Rev. Pat Robertson, a televangelist. A “regent” is someone who represents an absent king; in Regent’s case, that is Jesus Christ. It has 6,000 students who concentrate on law, education, business and divinity.

Robertson got the name trademarked for education purposes in the United States, according to school spokeswoman Mindy Hughes.

There is a Regent College in Vancouver, British Columbia, that also focuses on theology. Founded in 1968, it has 600 students.

Though some in Augusta might not like the recommended name, others are not upset.

“I don’t think a name is going to carry a university. I think the university is going to carry a name,” said Rep. Barbara Sims, R-Augusta. “Whatever is going to be beneficial to the university’s growth, I’ll support.”

What a complete surprise. A disaster. It sounds like an extension degree program or a group of community colleges.

Terrible!!

As an Augusta College graduate I very strongly oppose this but apparently what the alumni and supporters of the school think does not matter in Atlanta.

Augusta Regents University?

They are going to call it Georgia Regents University? Well of course they are. It apparently is, but they don't have to be so blatant about it. That was the worst possible choice for a name; so of course that is what they want. No one will have a clue where Augusta's University by the name is; which to me, is foreshadowing that this campus will eventually close. Augusta State University was the best choice and could include Augusta College and The Medical College under its wing and keep the historical lineage. University of Augusta was a bit too stuffy and a waste of the change of stationary and signage. GAS U was the second worst. This is a disgusting turn of events and will be a constant reminder of the too frequent worst publicity in recent history of Georgia Universities. I am sickened by this choice. This makes absolutely no sense and feels like every person that ever attended these campuses are being hammered with disrespect.

Remember how I commented a few times about that hint Dr. Azziz had given about it should be a totally new name? That bothered me to no end because I had an idea something like this would happen. As a former, big time supporter of Dr. Azziz, I am extremely disappointed. He should jump in now and correct this mistake before the stamp goes on.

Riverman is Right!

This is dumb. Dr. Azziz should step in. Sounds like a third rate internet diploma mill. Sounds as cheap and phony as that Eichols law firm advertised on late night TV.

The word regents was the carrot for those deciding. The word Georgia was for Dr. Azziz. Come on, Dr. Azziz, my former hero, I know you are behind all this. But my Riverman realism is going to kick in now...It's a done deal. We better get used to it. GRU I suppose.

What a disappointment. But it was Azziz who did claim that Augusta is not cool...so I guess he didn't think including Augusta in the name would be very cool.

Oh, goody! GRUnt U!

It's a totally STUPID name, no matter what Azziz or anyone else thinks. It almost certainly will end up being known as GRUnt U.

If Azziz actually has been pushing it, I hope he'll be man enough to admit it. But, from what I've observed over the last couple of years, sneaky and underhanded tactics seem to be how things get done all over MCG-GHSU-ASU-GRUnt. A lot of really smart people have arrived, but I've never seen such high-handedness or arrogance, and I've got 3 decades of watching. We're losing our souls and identity for the sake of (someone's)fame.

And I want to vomit at the thought of typing out that idiotic moniker a bazillion times.

@ omnomnom

MCG, because it is absorbing ASU, already owns the asu.edu domain name. If the University of Augusta were coming into being, the number of man-hours that would be saved by keeping @aug.edu as the email address is virtually incalculable.

Not that our betters really care about that. I believe that every employee and every student of both institutions, along with all the citizens of Augusta could come out and publicly protest this ridiculous name in front of Azziz's office, and nobody with any real influence would care at all, or they'd be too afraid of reprisal to dare show that they do.

Palmetto at 5:56 pretty much nailed it.

Mediocrity is the new name.

I just wonder how long this has really been a done deal. Reminds me of a boss I once had in a public institution. He would form a decision-making committee of stakeholders and assure us that we could debate all we want and as long as we want and, then, announce the decision we needed to forward to him and proceeded to walk out of the room .

That's what we get...

...when poor leadership recommends five c r a p choices to the Board of Regents.

Obviously, Dr. Azizz was very short-sighted in his recommendation to the regents and was not thinking big "University System of Georgia" picture. Yet another example of Azizz needing to get back to the OR and out of the board room. A successful surgeon, lawyer, engineer does not always make a great leader. Great leadership is what MCG, ASU/GHSU, GRU needs.

"Regents" from Augusta = 0

Pretentious name. 19 GA Regents = 17 white men, one white woman, one black man. And there are no Regents from Augusta. Check out http://www.usg.edu/regents/ Who are these people?
