Interim President Shirley Strum Kenny (left) meets with Augusta State University faculty and staff at a ceremony Wednesday.

“It’s such an interesting and friendly place,” Kenny said of the university as she met with faculty and staff.

Kenny is settling into her job as the interim president of the university after three years of retirement. Most recently, she served as the president of Stony Brook University from 1994 to 2009 and of Queens College University before that.

She said it feels natural to be back at work after taking a break.

“I am so impressed with Augusta State,” Kenny said.

Her predecessor, William A. Bloodworth Jr., was also in attendance.

Bloodworth said he is excited about the opportunity to step back into the teaching role after serving as Augusta State’s president for 19 years.

Already, he has a long to-do list, including writing hundreds of thank-you notes and a history of the university.

“I’m ready to get to work,” Bloodworth said.

Another ceremony Thursday evening on campus will provide faculty and staff the opportunity to meet with Kenny. It is not open to the public.
