The Richmond County Board of Education will soon partner with two Augusta-based health organizations to get the equipment necessary to prepare for the worst.

The school board, East Central Health District and East Central Regional Hospital will combine efforts to build an Ambubus Kit, which is a bus capable of transporting 18 special needs patients and casualties in the event of a disaster.

The RCBOE approved the agreement at its monthly board meeting Tuesday.

RCBOE will be responsible for donating an out-of-service bus for the cause.

The hospital, a facility that serves patients with mental illness, substance abuse and mental retardation, will assemble and maintain the bus while the health district will supply the materials.

“It’s in case there was a big emergency,” said school board member Jack Padgett.

Transportation Director Jimmie Wiley said he has to “look at the fleet” to determine if there is an out-of-service bus ready to donate.

The agreement also requires the school system to provide a driver in the case of an emergency.

With a continual shortage of bus drivers in schools, which continued last year, someone in the board meeting audience Tuesday asked if Wiley had a driver to spare.

Wiley didn’t answer, and just laughed.
