AIKEN - Aiken Technical College received a $2 million grant on Wednesday to partially fund the construction of a Center for Energy and Advanced Manufacturing.

The grant from the United States Economic Development Administration requires a matching amount of $2 million from other sources, according to a news release.

The $6.1 million Center for Energy and Advanced Manufacturing will house the college’s radiation protection technology, nuclear quality systems, welding and mechatronics programs. The academic programs are intended to train a workforce for the growing manufacturing, nuclear and alternative energy sectors in the Augusta and Aiken metro areas.

The current facilities for the academic programs were built in the early 1970s. The college will demolish the buildings.
