Four area high school seniors were named recipients of college-sponsored Merit Scholarships, the National Merit Scholarship Corp. announced Wednesday.

This is the third round of Merit recipients after the organization awarded its corporate sponsored awards April 18 and the $2,500 recipients May 2.

The college-sponsored awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution funding the scholarship, according to a news release.

There are 197 public and private institutions participating in the scholarship program this year. The program awarded 8,300 high school seniors with more than $35 million.

Recipients enter the competition as high school juniors when they take the Preliminary SAT and National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

Those with the highest scores in each state become semifinalists.

They move to the finalist round and are selected based on an essay, extracurricular activities, awards and leadership.

Local winners include:

• Mihir Patel: Lakeside High School. National Merit University of Georgia Scholarship. Probable career field: biochemistry/physics

• Alexis Trumble: South Aiken High School. National Merit Clemson University Scholarship. Probable career field: biology.

• Haley Barinowski: Westminster School of Augusta. National Merit Clemson University Scholarship. Probable career field: business/communications

• William Harris: North Augusta High School. National Merit Clemson University Scholarship. Probable career field: medicine.
