Azziz wary of petition to include 'Augusta' in university name

  • Follow Education

If some Augusta Commission members have their way, the name of the consolidated Augusta State and Georgia Health Sciences universities will be labeled “Augusta.” But GHSU President Ricardo Azziz said petitioning the University System of Georgia Board of Regents at this stage of the naming process is unwise.

Augusta Commission member Jerry Brigham has sent a petition to the Regents that asks that Augusta be included in the name of the newly consolidated university. The commission could discuss the issue at its next regularly scheduled meeting on June 5 or at a later meeting, he said. Brigham said he is not trying to create controversy but thinks the commission ought to be allowed to weigh in on the subject.

“It’s not saying we’re not going to be happy if Augusta isn’t in the name,” he said. “But we think it ought to be included.”

More than any other issue, the new university name has generated the most interest in the consolidation, with more than 1,250 people submitting suggestions to a consolidation group working on the issue.

A “short list” of possible new names is expected to go out in mid-June for internal and external feedback, and three finalists might be decided at a committee meeting in mid-July, Azziz said last week.

Ultimately, an unranked list of three names will be submitted to the regents, who will decide what the name will be. Without directly alluding to the petition, Azziz said, “inviting (the regents) to weigh in in advance is a bad idea.”

Shakespeare asked, “What is in a name?”

Answer — not much.

I like Central Savannah River University

CSRU

But, since Ricky Azziz said that the merged university was going to be a "consolidated" university, we could use the following and make both Azziz and Brigham happy:

Augusta Consolidated University

This whole name change fiasco is such a joke, made worse by the fact that there are banners still festooning MCG, inviting us all to get with the Georgia Health Sciences University name. A name now totally obsolete and irrelevant, of course, but the banners are a sobering reminder of the misplaced fervor and vacuous enthusiasm which surrounded the previous name change, amid great fanfare.

IMHO, it no longer really matters what it's called. For over 100 years it was MCG. Now we've had two name changes in as many years. That degree of instability and change is debilitating and morale sapping, unfortunately.

Plain and simple. Augusta

Plain and simple. Augusta University.

If you use the words "Augusta National" on your T shirts and hats, the police will get throw you in jail like you were trying to get a ticket outside the gate. The National has that name so copyrighted you could use it for a boat anchor.

If they are not "invited" to

If they are not "invited" to comment in advance there would be no reason to have input AFTER naming is complete. Azizz continually appears oppositional towards this community he is now a part of. It seems he would try to work with the local leadership to give the appearance of cooperation!! His name is tangled up with so many unpopular events people don't like what what is happening to the area.

If Three Names Are Submitted

If three names are submitted to the Regents and they have the petition to have Augusta in the name, that will help them choose the Augusta name. Smart move by Brigham. I wonder if we could have a petition to put Columbia County in the name, too?

Yale, Harvard, Princeton

Our country's greatest institutions are well known by one name. Who has given the most cash (adjusted for inflation) to our two institutions? Use that last name. No one can argue with cash.

Which Augusta

Keep in mind, Azziz is thinking bigger than the locals like commissioners. There are other Augusta's in the US, like Augusta Maine, Augusta Virginia, etc. Even when you say ASU most people think of Arizona State. So his point is this needs to be beyond local - something most folks around here can't do.

The best name is the

University of Augusta.. When the majority of people living in the US think of the word 'Augusta' a growing and vibrant city(Starbucks plant, Rockwood plant, non stop flights to DC, first Walmart neighborhood market in the state, Home2 Suites by Hilton, JB Whites condos/private parking, Regal Village renovation at Augusta West Plaza, Fort Discovery renovation, etc) in Georgia on the cusp of doing great things(GHSU/ASU riverfront campus, growing Central Business District/inner city, Augusta Regional Industrial Park/General Perry Smith Pkwy, etc)comes to mind... All you have to do is google the word 'Augusta', and see what city pops up on the screen first...

Love Dr. Azziz, but

I love Dr. Azziz, but this was a smart move on Jerry Brigham's part. The Regents will have the final word and this may lock in the name Augusta. Augusta University is the simplest and best name. You can still have a separate name for the med school, hospital with Augusta University above the name. I also want the Athen's med school satellite campus to say Augusta above its name. Ha.

Unwise

For The Augusta Chronicle to give this much attention to the following statement (plus the smarmy photograph) is most unwise:

But GHSU President Ricardo Azziz said petitioning the University System of Georgia Board of Regents at this stage of the naming process is unwise.

MCG belongs to the state not

MCG belongs to the state not Augusta-if you think so then I now support moving the school to Athens. The school is for serving all of Georgia-DO NOT PUT AUGUSTA in the name.

Where

Bizkit, the name reflects not who the university serves, but rather where the university sits.

There are plenty of precedents: Columbus State University, University of Dayton, University of Cincinatti, Memphis State University, University of Houston, and many more.

Why Change Anything?

You know, the more you think about it, there is really no good reason to change the name at all! Augusta State University would do very well for the name of the new merged, consolidated university.

The same people continue to

The same people continue to hate on Augusta no matter the subject...

Corgimom... I noticed you didn't respond to any of the developments in my earlier post, because you can't deny the vibrancy and growth...

The nasayers can't spin the $172 million Starbucks plant(140 jobs), and $115 million Rockwood Plant(100 jobs) both starting construction this year..

The city of Augusta has one of the fastest growing airports in the US, and that's why non stop flights to DC begin next month...

It's amazing people forget we still have several developments waiting in the background... The 115 acre Village at Riverwatch, 25 acre shopping center/10k sq. ft. Shoppes at Dyess Park, and Wheeler Town Park were a upscale apartment complex is joining Carmax..

People can say whatever they want to about the city of Augusta, but developers continue to invest in the city... The Regal Village theatre in the Augusta West Plaza is a prime example.. There's not many theatres opening in this economy, and if the building is used for it's original purpose.. Obviously it means additional money is flowing around Richmond County, and the poverty rate continues to decrease...

P.S. Only Fulton and Chatham counties have a median income higher than Richmond in terms of the main counties in the state...

Why Augusta State would no longer be appropriate

Little Lamb,

I have pointed this out before but I guess it bears repeating: the new name will represent the consolidation of two universities, Augusta State and Georgia Health Sciences universities. The name "state" actually refers to a class of universities within the University System of Georgia known as "State Universities," of which Augusta State is one. The new consolidated university will be counted among the "Research Universities" class so including "state" in the name would no longer fit. For those who are fans of the Medical College of Georgia name, it is still around only now it refers solely to the medical school and not the entire university.

Exception

You can't tell me that Georgia State University is not a research university.

Anyway, the Board of Regents could always make an exception to the rules they make up.

Why?

By the way, I appreciate your reading our comments and posting here, Mr. Corwin. I have a suggestion for you:

It would be good to know the thinking of Dr. Azziz. You reported here that Dr. Azziz thinks petitioning the University System of Georgia Board of Regents at this stage of the naming process is unwise. Likewise, Dr. Azziz is quoted as saying, “inviting (the regents) to weigh in in advance is a bad idea.”

It would have been a good follow-up if you had asked him to explain those notions. It is not obvious (or even evident) why either of those things is unwise or bad. For reporters to question the blather of our city's leaders would be good for our city.
