A former aide to U.S. Rep. Charlie Norwood and a current staff member of Georgia Gov, Nathan Deal has been appointed to a position at Georgia Health Sciences University, the school said.

Michael Shaffer, an Augusta native who is deputy chief of staff for the governor, will become the vice president of government relations/chief advocacy officer for GHSU in May.

In a statement, Deal credits Shaffer with “constant behind-the-scenes work” in getting the governor’s agenda through the past two legislative sessions.

“Michael’s talents will allow him to aid President (Ricardo) Azziz’s ambitious aims for Georgia Health Sciences,” the statement said. “In this way, he’ll continue to work with me as we build GHS into one of the top 50 academic health centers in the nation. This transition is a loss for our team, both professionally and personally, but we know that he’s the right man for the job.”

Shaffer was a campaign consultant to Deal’s 2010 bid for governor. He was a longtime aide to Norwood, who died in 2007, and later to U.S. Rep. Paul Broun, R-Ga.

In his new position, Shaffer will be in charge of local government affairs work with Georgia and South Carolina, the school said in a statement.

Superficially, it looks like Gov. Deal has appointed someone to keep a close eye on the GHSU/ASU merger.

Just this week we got a new

Just this week we got a new vice-president of military relations and new a vice-president of governmental relations. Presumably these are new positions. You just watch, when Merged University emerges from the rubble of the consolidation process, the total staff will be about 25% bigger. There might be fewer peons, but the vice-presidents and the executive staff will have ballooned.

Wow, didn't take Azziz long

Wow, didn't take Azziz long to spend an "easy" quarter of a million (+) dollars for a couple of lobbyists. Yet, the talks of layoffs and cutbacks are constantly on the lips of the administration of GHSU.What gives Ricky?

By the way, anytime that a position is created and filled in the same announcement without ever advertising it or taking applications, be suspicious.

All the comments are on the

All the comments are on the spot. Three new positions that surely pay over $130k each and to do what exactly? GHSU has become a blackhole for state tax dollars. Enough of empty promises, the only growth since Azziz has taken over has been in spending and in administration. Where's 'our' return on investment?
