5 Augusta-area students win National Achievement Scholarships

Five Augusta-area students won National Achievement Scholarship awards, the National Merit Scholarship Corp. announced Wednesday.

Nationwide, about 800 outstanding black high school seniors were named winners. The awards, totaling more than $2 million, are financed by grants from 29 corporate organizations and professional organizations, along with the National Merit Scholarship Corp.

The local winners, who each received a $2,500 National Achievement Scholarship, are:

• Schuyler D. Atkins; Augusta Preparatory Day School; probable career field, medicine

• Tariq R. Cannonier; A.R. Johnson Health Science and Engineering Magnet School; probable career field, electrical engineering

• Maya A. Mason, of Aiken; South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics in Hartsville; probable career field, biomedical engineering

• Danielle N. Rossi; John S. Davidson Fine Arts Magnet School; probable career field, education

• Shannon Young; Davidson; probable career field, law

The National Achievement Scholarship Program was established in 1964 to honor scholastically talented black youths and provide scholarships to a substantial number of the most outstanding participants in each annual competition.
