Robert “Buddy” Hendry, the director of Columbia County School Safety Officers, died Saturday at his home in Evans. He was 68.

Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Platt’s Funeral Home, 337 N. Belair Road, Evans.

Hendry had been battling lung cancer since July.

After a 28-year career with the Florida State Patrol, Hendry moved to Columbia County nearly 20 years ago and started a new career protecting the county’s pupils.

Buddy was a kind,

Buddy was a kind, compassionate and very caring person. From teaching in the classrooms to protecting those on various campuses, he could be seen often throughout the school system. He always had a smile and a kind word for others and as many police officers do, often put others ahead of himself.

He was a great Campus Police Chief and was always leading by example. His Christian values were easily observed on a daily basis.

May God be with his wife Phyllis, all of the CCBOE Campus Police Officers as well as his many friends and family. You are now in a much better place and may finally be in peace with God.

I was a first year teacher in Columbia County a few years back and one thing always impressed me about Buddy: he was as nice to me as he was to the superintendent and everybody in between. He always had time to ask how you were doing and to encourage you to hang in there. We'll miss him so much!
