Lakeside High takes Savannah River High School Science Bowl

Lakeside High School won the Savannah River High School Science Bowl on Saturday.

Lakeside’s team competed against 20 other schools in a regional competition of the 22nd annual U.S. Department of Energy National Science Bowl held at the University of South Carolina Aiken, according to a DOE news release.

The team is now eligible to compete in the National Finals in Washington, D.C., in April.

“Congratulations to the students at Lakeside High School, some of America’s future leaders in the science, technology, engineering and math fields,” U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu said in the release. “Through the National Science Bowl, we’re challenging today’s students and ensuring that America stays competitive an a rapidly advancing world.”

During each tournament, teams of students solve technical problems and answer scientific and mathematical questions in a fast-paced, Jeopardy!-style format.

The DOE created the competition in 1991 encourage students to excel and pursue careers in math and science.
