It’s time to recognize Richmond County’s top students and teachers.
The county’s STAR Student Program will be held at 12:30 p.m. Monday at St. Paul’s Church, 605 Reynolds St.
“This is a high honor for each student and for the student’s STAR Teacher,” said John Bell, an Augusta lawyer and the program organizer, in a letter about the event.
The program is sponsored by the Augusta Kiwanis Club.
The county’s 2012 STAR student and teacher will be named during the event, which features guest speaker Ruth Ann Knox, the president of Wesleyan College.
The STAR (Student Teacher Achievement Recognition) program is sponsored statewide by the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, Professional Association of Georgia Educators and the Georgia Department of Education.
The program honors high school students with the highest SAT scores and class rank and the teachers who were most instrumental in their academic development.
In Richmond County, STAR students and teachers were named from 11 schools.

CONGRATULATIONS to 11 of Richmond County's best students and teachers!
STAR student is an amazing accomplishment for these young people. As it is for the teachers. Many times, the recognition for the teacher comes out of left field, with no warning. Sometimes educators just don't know what sparks a student's definition of "instrumental" in the process.
Speaking of educational matters, wouldn't it be fitting for the Chronicle to have a "What's Cool With Education" column to match every column that involves Tribunals? Good news is a powerful tool in attitude adjustment; not only for students and faculty, but for the public, in general.
