UG-Augusta? Peach State? Readers suggest names for new university

  • Follow Education

The excitement and consternation over a new name for the merged Augusta State and Georgia Health Sciences universities reminds Robert Hamrin of the old Memphis State University when he lived in Memphis. The school was in an athletic conference with schools like the University of Louisville and University of Cincinnati.

“Many members of the University and community felt that ‘Memphis State’ sounded like hicksville compared to having a name like ‘University of Memphis,’” Hamrin wrote, and that’s just what the school became, to much satisfaction. So his suggestion: “How about ‘The University of Augusta?’”

His was one of about a dozen suggestions e-mailed to The Augusta Chronicle concerning the newly conjoined university. Many were for some combination of the existing names or evoked past names, such as “Augusta State University and Medical Center of Georgia,” which kept ASU and added the old Medical College of Georgia acronym, MCG, to the mix. John Hamilton went completely the other way with Peach State University.

“I see it as short and concise and it says exactly what it is,” while working in the state’s nickname, he said.

Having gone to the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, and noting that other states use a similar system, the University of Georgia at Augusta makes sense to Anna Wilds.

“It’s not an ‘us’ or ‘them’ thing. It’s a ‘we’ thing,” she said. “We’re all part of the University System of Georgia.” Another reader also suggested that name. Heidi Mayfield likes AGUS or AGUSTE, for “Augusta Georgia University System” or “Augusta Georgia University System Teaches Everything.”

Other suggestions of note:

AGS-HSU, for Augusta Georgia State Health Sciences University;

Georgia Regents University;

Georgia A & M University (Arts & Medicine);

Georgia Medical and State University.

I suggest the "University of

I suggest the "University of Political Clout of Augusta" that should compete well with the "Univeristy of Politcal Clout of Athens". Then we can later combine them and all the other schools to form the University System of Georgia. Sounds so circular doesn't it?????

Well maybe the "University of

Well maybe the "University of Peaches and Cream". ASU is the peach and GHS the cream. Sounds yummy doesn't it. I'm still ticked I can't call MCG, MCG anymore. Glad my father, uncles, and grandfathers aren't alive to see their alma mater and oldest medical school in US fade into oblivion.

That just sounds awful! It sounds like a credit union. What is wrong with calling it the University of Augusta? There are several cities with universities who bear a similar moniker. If you aren't currently enrolled, or planning to be enrolled at the new university then leave out the awful acronyms like CSRU. Who wants to attend a school named Central Savannah River University?? No thank you!
University of Augusta, thank you very much!!

I am a graduate. I attended

I am a graduate. I attended when it was Augusta College and felt so slighted by them changing it to ASU. Been there, done that. It ain't as big a thing as some would have us think.

But to your point, CSRU sounds like a train company. I like trains and want to be one like those dudes in Polar Express. Guess that's my reasoning. HAVE AN AWESOME weekend ever1

You know what makes more

You know what makes more sense than anything and requires no change? Call it Augusta State University and the medical part Georgia Health Sciences University. As you make other signs in the future for GHSU simply add ASU above the GHSU name. Really, that's simple and makes the most sense and requires no new signs.
