UG-Augusta? Peach State? Readers suggest names for new university

  • Follow Education

The excitement and consternation over a new name for the merged Augusta State and Georgia Health Sciences universities reminds Robert Hamrin of the old Memphis State University when he lived in Memphis. The school was in an athletic conference with schools like the University of Louisville and University of Cincinnati.

“Many members of the University and community felt that ‘Memphis State’ sounded like hicksville compared to having a name like ‘University of Memphis,’” Hamrin wrote, and that’s just what the school became, to much satisfaction. So his suggestion: “How about ‘The University of Augusta?’”

His was one of about a dozen suggestions e-mailed to The Augusta Chronicle concerning the newly conjoined university. Many were for some combination of the existing names or evoked past names, such as “Augusta State University and Medical Center of Georgia,” which kept ASU and added the old Medical College of Georgia acronym, MCG, to the mix. John Hamilton went completely the other way with Peach State University.

“I see it as short and concise and it says exactly what it is,” while working in the state’s nickname, he said.

Having gone to the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, and noting that other states use a similar system, the University of Georgia at Augusta makes sense to Anna Wilds.

“It’s not an ‘us’ or ‘them’ thing. It’s a ‘we’ thing,” she said. “We’re all part of the University System of Georgia.” Another reader also suggested that name. Heidi Mayfield likes AGUS or AGUSTE, for “Augusta Georgia University System” or “Augusta Georgia University System Teaches Everything.”

Other suggestions of note:

AGS-HSU, for Augusta Georgia State Health Sciences University;

Georgia Regents University;

Georgia A & M University (Arts & Medicine);

Georgia Medical and State University.

Tom Corwin, what are you

Tom Corwin, what are you trying to do...act like you don't read our comments? We kicked this naming thing around from every angle. Medical can't be in the name as UGA shouldn't be. Why not put our suggested names up?

Just call it University or

Just call it University or Augusta or Augusta University. UGA will never allow UGA in the name. Peach State U? That's beyond cheesy.. why not just call it Pimento Cheese U?

How about Summerville

How about Summerville University or maybe Bellevue University(oops, there's one of those in Nebraska but it's a great hospital in NY, though I think it's where they send the crazies)? Another local landmark thought: Froghollow University, for the swamp land the school filled in (just kidding). Allen Park used to lie near the old Sears building that is now part of the college and the Georgia Peach, Ty Cobb, played ball there; maybe Allen University (oops again, already one of those). What about Cobb University, since Ty has funded a number of scholarships at MCG and his old home is on William St. near ASU (nah, too controversial, he was a bigot)? Perhaps it should honor one of the many doctors in Augusta's history who was mayor: Jennings University, Hook University, Lewis Ford University, Gavin University or even Dearing University. Shucks, this is hard. Oh, heck. I like Christenbury College and Health Sciences University (it sort of has that elite English School air.)

Westobou U. A and M

Westobou U.

A and M universially means agricultural and mechanical. It can't have medical in the name because all of ASU will not be medically related. It can't be UGA-Augusta or some such variation because it's not part of UGA and it makes it sound provincial.

So CSRU....or Westobou

Yeah, RM. It was kind of

Yeah, RM. It was kind of tacky that Corwin did not list some of the names the online commenters put up. Many of them were way cooler than AGUSTE or Georgia Regents U. I thought SHAMU (Super Health and Medical University) was cool, but the consensus winner on the comments page was Central Savannah River University.

CSRU

That name shows inclusiveness and regionality.

point taken Rob. Although

point taken Rob. Although CSRU is pretty good. Just as good as what's being considered.

I tried to go in and appears there is no way to change the display name. I figure if there's relevance in putting your actual name on here, I got no problems with it. Please advise how to get mine changed to David Parker. Thanks.

THE UNIVERSITY OF

THE UNIVERSITY OF AUGUSTA!!!!! Plain and simple!!
Do we really want something like South Carolina's horrid system. USC-A, USC-U, USC-B, USC-S, etc?
Let's keep the colors and traditions of ASU (blue/white, athletic programs, etc) and call it the University of Augusta!!
Go Jags! Go University of Augusta!!

Oooooops. This comment makes no sense now that I see that kiwi's post (visible in the Discussion page) is invisible here on the story page.

Kiwi used a filtered word that he said rhymes with "Bass."

I agree with the name

I agree with the name University of Georgia-Augusta. You're combining both schools so why not combine the names. You're already in the University of Georgia system so to me it make sense to just name the school University of Georgia-Augusta. The name alone should help with enrollment numbers.

Princess Augusta University

Princess Augusta University for Princess Augusta. Or Daughter of King George III University (may start another revolution). Queens University at Charlotte was named for Princess Augusta's mother.

We asked people to email

We asked people to email suggested names to me. I used the ones that were sent in and the names of the readers who sent them when I could verify the name. As a general rule, we don't use anonymous sources for news stories. I have about eight more names that were submitted after the story was turned in that I will post later today. As always, feel free to comment on them.

Princess Augusta will always

Princess Augusta will always be the paddle-wheel boat....exclusively. King George and his daughter lost that name back in the 1980's to the riverboat cruise operator. They had a good run though.

@Ben There and others; I

@Ben There and others; I really like Ben's suggestion! 'Georgia Institute of Arts and Sciences' sounds pretty good. Could be Georgia University of Arts and Sciences which is alphabetically correct or it could be Georgia University of Sciences and Arts so Azzuz will have his empire first.

Azziz University sounds like

Azziz University sounds like a winner! (prelude to the departure of two distinct(ive) Augusta institutions. Oh, wait, I forgot, there's no longer a Medical College of Georgia -- we've already lost that one to the inflated administrator(s).

The only thing about the name

The only thing about the name Georgia University of Sciences and Arts is that it does not use the word 'medical' or 'medicine.' ASU already issues degrees in the arts and sciences. Maybe Georgia University of Medicine, Arts and Sciences. GUMAS makes a tough acronym!
