Seven Augusta-area teachers recently obtained certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.

Six are from Aiken County, and one is from Grovetown. They are among 6,200 nationwide who became National Board certified teachers this year.

In South Carolina, 360 educators earned the certification, and nine did in Georgia.

Teachers seeking National Board certification go through a two-part process that takes one to three years to complete. The process requires candidates to reflect on their practices, understanding of subject material and preparation techniques, according to the South Carolina Center for Educator Recruitment, Retention and Advancement. They prepare a portfolio with video recordings of their classroom teaching, lesson plans, student work samples and reflective essays, and complete assessment exercises to prove they have mastered the subjects they teach.

South Carolina ranks third in the nation with 8,142 National Board certified teachers, placing behind North Carolina and Florida.

Georgia is 10th, with 2,611. South Carolina had the fifth-highest number of newly certified teachers this year, while Georgia’s nine tied it with Michigan and Nebraska for 40th place.
