Georgia pupils' CRCT results show improvement

Elementary and middle school pupils across Georgia generally posted better results on the Criterion-Referenced Competency Test this year, according to a report released Thursday by the state Department of Education.

Statewide, only two areas -- fourth-grade reading and sixth-grade English/language arts -- showed drops. The percentage of fourth-graders passing reading fell from 89 percent in 2010 to 88 percent this year; in English/language arts, the pass rate dropped from 92 percent to 91 percent.

Five other areas had the same pass rates both years: third-, fourth- and fifth-grade science; fourth-grade English/language arts and fifth-grade social studies.

Every other tested area in every other grade level showed a rise, led by a gain of 8 percentage points in sixth-grade social studies to a 72 percent pass rate and 5 point jump in fifth-grade math to 87 percent passing.

"I am encouraged that the CRCT results show many more of our students mastering a more rigorous curriculum," State School Superintendent John Barge said in a statement. "The credit for these tremendous results goes back to the local level, where they have raised the bar for all students."

Pupils in third, fifth and eighth grades must pass the CRCT in reading to be promoted to the next grade level, and fifth- and eighth-graders also must pass the CRCT in math to advance.

The CRCT is given to pupils in third through eighth grades in reading, English/language arts, math, science and social studies.
