Episcopal Day School's first-, second- and third-graders participated in a book parade Aug. 26. The pupils dressed up as their favorite character based on a book they read over the summer.

The school's first-, second- and third-graders marched around the courtyard, each holding a book they read over the summer, dressed as their favorite character.

There were a few Harry Potters, a couple of Fancy Nancys, a Cat in the Hat, a Pippi Longstocking and several pirates.

The book parade is a celebration of the summer reading program, said Karen Dye, head of the lower school. The parade has been held annually for at least 20 years.

"It is a tradition here. This is an event they look forward to each year and they have so much fun participating," Dye said. "Even our older children come out to watch and cheer on our younger students as they walk in the parade."

The pupils are expected to be able to discuss what they read and share information about the character, she said.

Eight-year-old Eliza Epps dressed up as Judy Moody from the book Around the World in 81/2 Days , which is a part of the Judy Moody book series.

"I love reading," said the third grader. "It's my favorite subject. I read everything, because you can learn a lot from reading."

Classmate Reab Berry also enjoys reading. He dressed up as one of the children from the book Roxaboxen. "I have read all of the Harry Potter books. I like reading the Percy Jackson books too," he said.

It was the third-graders' last year participating in the book parade. Eliza said she's going to miss it.

"Everyone is always smiling and having fun walking and showing off their costume," she said. "It's like you're really famous. I'm going to miss dressing up, but next year, we get to watch it."
