School bus wreck hurts five

  • Follow Education

Five Meadowbrook Elementary pupils were taken to an area hospital for observation Thursday after a vehicle ran into the side of a school bus.

The driver of the vehicle told officers the brakes failed, causing him to run a stop sign on Ira Road. His car hit the bus, which was traveling on Meadowbrook Drive at 3:30 p.m., said Lt. Scott Gay of the Richmond County Sheriff's Office. Gay said 56 students were on the bus.

The driver was charged with operating a vehicle with defective equipment and running a stop sign. He was also taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Why is the Sheriff's office

Why is the Sheriff's office acting like they are handling this? The BOE officers are the ones doing the reports and taking care of their business...

I wonder just what is the authority of the BOE in cases off school grounds? Are there any ground rules or do they make them up as they go?

They make them up as they go

They make them up as they go I think. It is surprising to me that more wrecks do not happen. When people in cars see a school bus they lose their minds. I see it often. They run school bus stop signs and they pull out in front of a bus with children and the bus driver has to slam on his brakes to keep from hitting the car. People drive through school zones like they aren't even there. You guys are crazy who do that. You are risking the future of America so you can get to wherever on time. Do I like getting stuck behind a bus? No but a child's life isn't worth the risk because of my dislikes.

Tisk. The way busses load an unload kids is the reason people are loosing their minds. Currently there are no actual bus stops and drivers halt at virtually every house on a street. This results in a long stream of vehicles following busses very closely, and they refuse to pass or leave room for other people to pass these things. In my neighborhood, I have had to pass up to 10 cars and a bus to get out of this type traffic jam. What we need is posted school bus stops. Further, they need to relook the law on stopping traffic both ways on 5 lane highways for busses.

And just how did this article bring up a rant againt BOE, bus stops and school busses? Any reason to diss. How about some of you attend some meetings and actually try to fix the problems ???Evidently everyone knows how to fix everything that is wrong so why not volunteer and help the school board??

Correct Just Me. Diss, BOE

Correct Just Me. Diss, BOE Police have jurisdiction over all schools, buildings, and vehicles belonging to the Board. Also, BOE Police have jurisdiction over school bus stops and their area of coverage stretches up to 500 yards from property lines. Additionally some of the BOE officers are Deputized. Which means they also have the same authority in the county as deputies do. So..... They ain't just "campus security guards"!
