MCG could get a name change

Azziz says health and science university gets lost in 'college'

  • Follow Education

In the era of new Medical College of Georgia President Ricardo Azziz, it is a time of rethinking, retooling and perhaps renaming.

At a meeting Wednesday of MCG Health Inc. and the overarching board MCG Health System Inc., Azziz said it is time for the health sciences university to be named as a university. The college name will continue to be associated with the School of Medicine, which is what comes to mind for most people anyway, he said.

"The Medical College of Georgia as a name is very valued and has great historic value," Azziz said. "But most people around the country and in the state recognize it as the name of the medical school. And that is one of the reasons that often when people are asked about the Medical College of Georgia, they forget it is actually a health sciences university because we don't have university in our name."

Except for the Medical College of Wisconsin, which is a private, freestanding school, other health sciences universities have changed from a college name to a university name, Azziz said. It was one of the issues that faculty has raised with him, he said, but Azziz recognizes it will probably be controversial to others.

"We're trying to address the sensitivities of all alumni in the community who value the name Medical College of Georgia while recognizing that we have evolved beyond just a large medical school to a full-fledged health sciences university," he said. The clinical system will retain its MCG name, he added.

That was just part of the re-evaluating the school's leaders are doing. MCG Health System and Physicians Practice Group, which represents the school's doctors, are also re-examining plans for a clinic in Columbia County. The proposed clinic, which has survived a court challenge from other health care providers in the area, is now being re-examined by a consultant, said Michael A. Herbert, the interim president and CEO of PPG.

"Given the economic climate that is going on, we want to kind of review the whole scope of the project," he said. "The business plan was done several years ago. Times change."

In his first public remarks about the resignation of School of Medicine Dean D. Douglas Miller, Azziz said Miller recognized it as a time of change and a good time to step down.

"There is nothing unusual in transition times for individuals to decide that they would rather step down and allow a different strategy to move forward," Azziz said. "There is nothing nefarious about it."

MCG Health System is revamping how it searches for its positions but will likely be conducting national searches for a new provost and dean unless the positions are filled internally, Azziz said. There will be another interim position coming soon -- Vice President for Research Development Frank Treiber is leaving to go to the Medical University of South Carolina.

MCG to revamp searches

MCG Health System Inc. is continuing to work on a 90-day plan to revamp how it does searches for key positions, aligning and potentially sharing services among various entities, capitalizing the new nonprofit company and establishing an office, probably on campus, and hiring outside legal counsel.

They want "University" in the

They want "University" in the name, then put it there.....Medical University of Georgia(MUG)? That would refer to the overall system. For the medical school itself, a division of the university system separate from dental, nursing and allied health........Medical College of Georgia(MCG), as it has always been, since 1831 or 2, whenever it was changed from Medical Academy of Georgia. Why is this so complicated?

No HTN007, they need to

No HTN007, they need to "create" a committee of 15 to spend 10-12 months on this, and then come up with MUG. Having worked at 3 teaching Medical University Hospitals, thats the way things happen.
Never have I witnessed such a waste of dollars, grants and back room deals. Glad I am out of that atmosphere and working in a Hospital where patient care is the priority and funds are spent wisely.

Azziz has a bit of a problem

Azziz has a bit of a problem since Adams in Athens wants to call their new medical campus at the old Navy School, the University of Georgia Health Sciences Center. If MCG becomes the Health Sciences University of Georgia, a logical name, it will further confuse everyone.
By the way, since the dean "resigned", I hope the new dean cleans house. (Miller had been applying for jobs all over the southeast)
The medical school has some top leaders who have been there decades and look like they are on life-support. How about a clean sweep and some new energy and new perspective? They also have way too many vice and associate deans. It is ridiculous.

Let's all think back a bit.

Let's all think back a bit. Do you remember ten or so years ago when the powers that were on the Board of Regents got the bright idea to re-name all of Georgia's state colleges and turn them into " state universities?" Yes, Augusta College became Augusta State University. West Georgia College became West Georgia State University. You get the picture. The regents wanted to re-name MCG as well, but (as I recall) the alumni of MCG rose up in protest. They insisted that the name remain Medical College of Georgia. Some even threatened to dry up their contributions to the alumni association and to building funds. The regents relented.

Do you think the alumni can pull that trick off again?

It is a no win situation. No

It is a no win situation. No matter what name they chose, it would alienate certain people. The losses would outnumber the gains. There are much more pressing problems to address than the name. Azziz would lose this battle, and he shouldn't pick a battle that he can't win.
Names carry a lot of emotion, and often new arrivals like Dr. Azziz don't understand how deep those emotions can be.

The name change is part of

The name change is part of the Board of Regents effort to move the main medical campus to Athens and convert MCG into the mostly dental branch. The name change is an attempt to confuse and baffle the public by relabeling the brand. What happened to the lawsuit about the name of the MCG Foundation? Alumni should be outraged.

I have to chuckle when I hear

I have to chuckle when I hear academics talk about conducting a "national search" for a position. In these days of the internet, what search is NOT "national"? The second a position announcement hits the internet it is not only national, it is international. One thing for sure. Academic "searches" are brutal, they are conducted by people who have multiple agendas and no clue what to do. Academic searches are like someone strolling through the meat section and ending up with ground round, when you could have had a filet mignon.

A 1942 diploma awarding a

A 1942 diploma awarding a Doctor of Medicine degree reads, in part: "This Diploma makes known that the University of Georgia School of Medicine on the nomination of the Faculty of Medicine...." Why not return to that name? It would signal a more collaborative, collegial approach to improving health care for all Georgians. I'll answer my own question: It won't happen because of opposition from some alumnus and from the entrenched power interests in Augusta who have fought behind the scenes for years to keep all control (and dollars) in the city. I'll be interested to see how Dr. Azziz deals with this narrow-mindedness that has handicapped MCG and kept it from becoming the first-class institution that it should be.

My neighbor, an MCG Alum,

My neighbor, an MCG Alum, received a survey within the past couple of years (when Dr. Rahn was still President) and in the survey, it asked about a name change. A suggestion was "Georgia's Health Sciences University." Although MCG's name obviously didn't change, it is interesting that the letters "MCG" have replaced the written out name "Medical College of Georgia" on most of their official logos (I found their Signature Gallery page: http://www.mcg.edu/identity/logo/gallery.html), and "Georgia's Health Sciences University" is prominently featured. It looks like the creative folks at MCG have been slowly replacing "Medical College of Georgia" with "MCG: Georgia's Health Sciences University" all along. I assume the next step would be to simply drop the "MCG." The only logos that still include "Medical College of Georgia" are the round ones listed on the bottom of that web page, but "Georgia's Health Sciences University" is also on them. Very interesting.

"It won't happen because of

"It won't happen because of opposition from some alumnus and from the entrenched power interests in Augusta who have fought behind the scenes for years to keep all control (and dollars) in the city." This is a misguided approach that will do more to accelerate a possible move to Athens than to keep MCG in Augusta. MCG has to move forward. It can do that in Augusta, if it gets community and alumni support, or it can move on to a location that is more forward thinking and supportive of innovative thinking, new approaches, investment in recruiting and keeping top talent, and less mired in the past. Yes names are emotional, but changing them does not mean you have lost sight of your history. A name change in this case can signal a commitment to a stronger future built on the foundation of the past. It should be more important to alumni that MCG develops a position as a nationally ranked health sciences university than that they maintain their name. The former will increase the value of their degrees. It behooves the Augusta community to support change and forward movement at MCG, not thwart it. As MCG gains recognition as an institution, this can only benefit Augusta. Further, with all the negative baggage around MCG, why all the angst over changing the name? Why let something like a name confine an institution to the past when a new name can signal a brighter future?
