First, they lost their windows. Now their blinds are missing.
On Tuesday, a final accounting of what it cost to repair 158 broken windows at Copeland Elementary School totaled $24,000 -- about $8,000 more than originally anticipated.
That's because asbestos was found in the putty holding the old windows in place. So the school system had to call in an environmental cleanup group at a cost of about $11,000, school system facilities director Benton Starks said.
"This was expensive," he said.
During the repair, blinds were taken down and lost, so add $2,000 to $3,000 to the tally.
"They just got hauled off," Starks said Tuesday. He said things were hectic as workers hurried to make the repairs so school could reopen.
The blinds had been piled up, and officials think someone thought they were trash.
So the windows are fixed, but Starks' department is still trying to figure out what to do about the blinds.
Finding the extra money will be difficult, Starks said. His budget has already taken a big hit with the window repairs.
He said his office might have a leftover roll of tinting material it could use.
If the office doesn't have leftovers, the cost would be about $50 to $60 a window, he said. That's still cheaper than the $80 a window new blinds would cost.
Starks, who has been facilities director for a decade, said this is probably the second-most expensive vandalism incident he has seen.
The most costly occurred about 10 years ago, when someone set fire to a wing at Josey High, he said.
That ended up costing $1.5 million.
In the Copeland case, a 13-year-old girl and 9-year-old boy were charged. School officials have said they could seek restitution from the youths' parents through a lawsuit, but they haven't decided yet.
Seek restitution? Wouldn't that entail holding someone, besides the taxpayer, responsible? I doubt that will happen.
The school could seek restitution from the parents but more than likely it's like the old saying "you can't get blood from a turnip" and in the meantime the school is still without blinds and only added the cost of a lawsuit. I realize 158 window blinds is a bunch but couldn't a couple of local businesses offer them at a discounted price for the school?
well mr. johnson you can probably forget that...every effort will be made to justify sticking the taxpayer with the 24000 bill and excuses will be made for the "poor" parents and why they should not be held responsible and it's best for society tht they pick up the tab and let the "poor" parents go with a stiff warning and a slight slap on the wrist...then in the order of continued state/federal funding in this the era of declining richmond county enrollment...the children will be sent to the knucklehaed...oops i mean the alternative school so they will still be counted as attending school, as opposed to filing charges against the parents for neglect and permanently expelling the children from richmond cnty school system..by filing criminal charges the school district and society will benefit by mandating the partent(s) give something back or make restitution thru community service(cleaning bedpans, roadside litter removal, cleaning up parks, working in the schools keeping the bathrooms clean..etc)
Just tack on another $5,000 in lawyer fees. Didn't the school have insurance?
Have the perps been caught? If so, make them and/or their parents pay.
The blinds come in standard sizes and could be bought from lowes for 1/4 the price quoted, and they will deliver for a small fee. The procedure for installation is set up step ladder loosen left and right brackets, install new blind, close brackets fold ladder , move to next window. Where are they getting these figures? By the way where was the maintenance people while the shades were being removed? Why didn't the maintenance people remove them before the workers arrived? Just how many dedicated maintenance workers (not landscapers) do we have per multi-million building anyway?
As to the cost of the repairs, i also think $158 each to replace 158 standard sized panes of glass is also ridiculous.
Even the best parents can have bad kids. You can't watch them 100% of the time.
