A suspect has been captured in Florida after a man was fatally shot and his wife injured last night outside a Martinez church.

Columbia County Sheriff's Capt. Steve Morris said Daniel Nelson Robinson, 21, of Jacksonville, was taken into custody in his hometown this morning.

Last night, Morris said, a man was fatally shot and his wife injured outside Marvin United Methodist Church at Wheeler and Belair roads.

About 10:39 p.m., deputies responded to the church and found the man dead on scene, according to Columbia County Coroner Vernon Collins. He identified the victim was William Rountree DaVitte, 55, of Martinez.

Deputies from Richmond and Columbia counties were initially searching for two suspects, but later said it was just one.  He was  believed to be in the victim’s vehicle, a 2010 gold Nissan Murano.

“The husband and wife were here at the church to activate the sprinkler system,” Columbia County Capt. Steve Morris said. “The husband was shot fatally and the wife has been transported to (Georgia Regents Medical Center) to receive treatment.”

Deputies initially believed the woman had been shot, but later said she was injured. She was later released.

Morris said incidents of this magnitude are “extremely uncommon” in this area of Columbia County.

“Very rare,” Morris said. “I’m not sure of the circumstances or what led up to this. It’s still very early in the investigation and we hope to find out what happened very soon.”

Morris is unsure if the victims are members of Marvin United Methodist Church.

“All I know is they were here to activate the sprinkler system,” Morris confirmed.

tragedy

A loss of a life is never something to make light of. Limited information is offered, likely for a reason. Let's pray that the perpetrator is apprehended and justice is served as the law provides.

Columbia County

The 400 block of Wheeler road is the part of Wheeler road between Wheeler/Flowing Wells and South Belair road.. The 400 block is located in Columbia County...

I want the entire CSRA to succeed, and there's nothing exciting about somebody being shot..

Dang, what a crying shame. They were trying to help the church for goodness sakes. Condolences to the poor wife.

I know what you mean; but don't look to foward to that day, because it probably won't come! Death penalty cases are becoming more and more rare in this liberal society we live in!! They will probably only seek life without parole!!

Awful

This is a terrible thing to happen anywhere but at a church makes it even worse! Someone just helping out a church and they get killed, this was done by an evil person!

With a 4+ hour driving time to Jacksonville Fla

This animal wasted no time getting there and the Fla LEO's wasted no time arresting him.

Excellent LEO work all around.

However,
IF and When the animal is returned to ARC it is too bad the ARC DA has a record of likely opt'ing for a Life without parole convictions instead of a Death Penalty.

Some People !!

Those negative comments at the beginning of this thread had no place in this tragic story.
Prayers to all affected by this senseless shooting. I hope this animal gets the ultimate justice for this act.

Nocnoc. Why did this happen? What caused the murderer to be there and attack them? I hope the facts come out quick. God bless the family.

Please read the article before you post. He won't be returned to "ARC", it happened in Columbia County. There's crime everywhere, but thank goodness we're better off, at least for now, in Columbia County.

Ridiculous

I agree with Curly and Justthefacts... the comments at the beginning of this thread were made by some shallow people. A life was lost and a family changed forever because of this act, whether it was in Columbia or Richmond County, it doesn't matter! The facts are the facts, it was in Columbia County and it was a low life scum who doesn't need to be on this earth that committed the crime. The shameful part is that I dont see Al Sharpton or Jessie Jackson here crying for the victim. I don't see stores being looted and rioting inthe streets for this victim....

Two innocent people were

Two innocent people were victimized that is all that matters. Not where it happened. A son, father, husband, friend was killed. A daughter, mother, wife, friend will have to live with this tragedy every day of her life without her husband. That is what matters! A brutal attack and murder! That is what matters. Innocent victims! That is what matters. If it was your friend or family you might care more about the victims than your own personal agenda. Tragic and sad for the family. Two wonderful people who would help anyone and I do known them personally. Thoughts and prayers for the entire family. That is what matters!

Carjacking

I see that in the updated story now. Didn't see the tv reports this morning. So sad for the family. What other than the Satan himself would cause a young man to do something so terrible? These apparently were hard working people - out at night just to start the sprinkler system. Wrong place, wrong time. Evil. Bad combination.

You will not get the chance. Some liberal judge will sentence them to life and the tax payers will support them the rest of their lives.

If the perp was desperate enough to murder to get a vehicle and get out of town that quickly, it has me wondering what he did just BEFORE this heinous act that prompted him to do it...

historylover, I will tell you why this happened. The Great Society, democrats, liberals and black leaders created this mess. Here is a web site of a black man that tells it like it is.

What a sicko

What's so hard about just taking the dang car and leaving the owners to walk home or call for a ride? Did this moron think they wouldn't be noticed lying on the ground?

He should join ISIS. He'd fit right in.
