Man attempts to escape Richmond County jail with broken pants zipper

Police said a burglary suspect used a broken zipper in a jail escape attempt on Tuesday.

Police said the suspect, Tony Maurice Walker Jr., 29, broke into an apartment on the 2000 block of Rosier Road and stole a television, DVD player and DVD.

He was in the interview room for questioning when police observed Walker on surveillance video making attempts to escape.

According to Richmond County Sheriff’s Sgt. Michael McDaniel, Walker removed the zipper from his pants to try to pick the lock on his leg irons. He also broke a metal bar in the interview room after repeatedly pushing and pulling on it.

Walker was booked into the Richmond County jail on charges of first degree burglary, interference with government property and escape.
