Two inmates who escaped the Grovetown Department of Public Safety Detention Center late Friday are back in police custody, officials said.
Michael Davis, 24, and Joshua Gray, 21, who escaped about 8:20 p.m., were caught Saturday morning in Richmond County as they attempted to check in at the Knights Inn on Boy Scout Road, Chief Gary Owens said.
The two escaped through a broken fence at the department’s temporary holding facility, he said, and made their way to the home of Gray’s mother, Malisa Self.
Self and Samuel Cline Jr. assisted the escapees by driving them to the hotel. Owens said both have been charged with aiding and abetting.
Davis and Gray were being held on misdemeanor probation offenses and were set to serve only a couple of days in the detention center. Now, both will be transferred to the Columbia County Detention Center on felony charges.
The broken fence has since been repaired, Owens said.
