Child's mouth taped shut; mom arrested

An Augusta mother has been charged after nurses said she had taped her 2-year-old son’s mouth shut to keep him quiet.

Georgia Regents University police were called to the hospital Sunday after a nurse entered a room where the boy was being treated and discovered his mouth “disfigured,” an incident report states.

The nurse told police the mother, Stephanie Nicole Harris, 21, of Second Avenue, admitted to putting tape over his mouth because he was making too much noise.

The nurse told officers she feared that the child, who has several medical conditions, could have aspirated. The report states the child is nonverbal but will moan.

The mother changed her story in a written statement, saying, “We was in the room playing around and I put tape on his mouth as a joke ... wasn’t harming him or anything.”

The nurse told officers the tape had been described as three pieces straight across, covering all parts of the mouth without any way for him to get air.

GRU officers took Harris into custody several hours later on charges of deprivation of a minor. She also was issued a criminal trespass warning that bans her from all GRU property.

Would Like More Information

Three pieces of tape is MORE than a "joke". We are probably raising her son anyway, so lock her up. I'd like more information as to why her son has "several medical conditions". Yes, too bad her legs weren't taped shut a couple of years ago.

What that woman really needs

What that woman really needs is help and support. She obviously has a severely disabled child; and while what she did was wrong, it would appear that she is overwhelmed.

I have compassion for anybody with a severely disabled child, the stress and strain is enormous, and I don't think a criminal trespass warning is going to do that child any favors. All it will do is make it so that the mother won't be able to get him proper medical care. How will that help that child?

There have been times when I thought

There have been times when I thought about it, but I know better. You take a deep breath and ask God, please help me because I am at my wits end and I love my child so much.

Seeing people with children with numerous problems when I was in the health field, you can see the frustration and the unspoken cries for help from parents. If I ever saw that the frustration was leading to a bad event I would talk to the parent and encourage them and YES I have turned people in and had an absolutely just call on every occasion. I do feel that reaching out is a good way to start, but times do call for more invasive means when it comes to a childs well being.

I have misjudged people and I have been misjudged so factoring that in, I try to see from many angles and adjust my attitude and beliefs accordingly. May we all learn from things we see and do ourselves before we jump the gun.

Compassion

Sure I see the probable cause for the deprivation of a minor charge. But odds are, like it or not, she will probably retain custody of the child. And the child is innocent. He needs health care services and like previously mentioned the trespass warning just makes quality care that much less accessible to him. That is a lot worse than taping his mouth shut. I also see the general lack of compassion and reason, the anger, that seems to be erupting in our society. Mob mentality. "Tape er legs shut!" Beat that you know what until she's a gob of bloody goo. Before you know it we will be injecting blue dye in little baby Dagmar's eyes. Or throw em all in a big chamber full o gas. Hope the big bad tough guys aren't at the short end of the stick one day for whatever reason. What goes around comes around.

"Father"? Are you serious?? You really think this kid has a father in his life? (If he had, they would have called him and turned the kid over to him). Current odds are 72.3% that this child was born out of wedlock and the father (more accurately, sperm donor) does not live with him or know him at all.

Yes, if she has a child with multiple medical problems, there is no way that she would be able to work. But that doesn't mean that she is on welfare and food stamps by choice.

"Called the father and turned the kid over to him"??? The child is in a hospital bed, because he has multiple medical problems! What do you mean, "turn the kid over to him"??? How do you know that the father isn't present in that child's life, from this newspaper story? Do you see any reference to DFACS being called in?

When my son was very small, I didn't work. I couldn't, he had too many medical problems and I spent at least one day a week at DDEAMC. That's the way it is when a parent has a child with multiple health problems.

I wonder if people thought that I was on welfare, and on food stamps, and a single mother, because I was at the hospital and didn't work?

For all anybody knows, the father wasn't at the hospital because HE WORKS, just like my son's father wasn't at the hospital, because he worked.

Do you think that just because she is black, that she is automatically on welfare and that there is no father around?

I call that racist, and mean, and decidedly un-Christian.

Then you have the nerve to ask someone else how they know things that aren't in the story...sheesh. THEN go on to acuse people of being racist, when no racist comment was made. It was YOU that implied that because she is black that she was on welfare. No one here said that except for you, corgi.

Maybe the child is autistic, which according to you (in contradiction to the actual medical profession and the NIH) is not a disability.

We are in the fifth generation of welfare receipients. She looks like she needs her mouth taped shut. She has not missed any meals. This nonsense must be stopped. Sooner, rather than later, the middle class folks{the working folks} are going to rebel against our government.

Most to the US felt so also up until the late 1960's.

It was found that 25% of Native American Indian women had been sterilized without their consent.

1979: 20,000 Operations Performed in California
Over a 70-year period, California performs a third of all government funded sterilizations in the United States. The practice largely targets Latinos and Blacks.

SO HAS THE PRACTICE STOPPED?

NO!

As recent as 2010 A California Woman's Prison Forced Sterilized 148 inmates without their knowledge during other unrelated operations.

Arnall was a progressive politician in Georgia who was very much in favor of the practice of eugenics.

The Georgia Training School for Mental Defectives in Gracewood opened in 1921. The hospital’s initial main function was to be a place of residence for eugenically segregated individuals, mostly the mentally retarded.

The hospital changed its name to Gracewood State School and Hospital (and now Gracewood Center) and still functions as a mental hospital.

Gracewood began implementing the sterilization law in the 1940s through the practice of recommending sterilization before the release of a patient. Family members had ten days after notification of the upcoming procedure to submit written objections; otherwise the state took the lack of response as an implied consent.

The total number of reported sterilizations at the Gracewood facility is 408, with over half of that number representing women.

The sterilization practices at Gracewood were discontinued in the 1960s.

BTW: The facility was thrown into the public eye in 1939 when there was a fire in one of the Dormitories, killing six of the patients, and alerting the public to the overcrowding of the institution.

There was an obstetrician in Aiken years ago who would take a woman on Medicaid for her second pregnancy, but only if she would sign an agreement to have her tubes tied. After the fact, a couple of the women who agreed ro his condtions later brought a lawsuit against him. I don't remember how much they sued for, but it was a substantial amount. They won their lawsuit. They were awarded less than $10 in damages!

That might seem harsh to some but some of them couldn't take care of themselves, much less a child...They still had raging hormones & were able to find a way to be together....I know this because many in my family worked at Gracewood ...my family took in a patient who was born at Milledgeville from 2 young residents..he had a very sad life & no family except for my parents & grandmother........he cried when my dad took him off the reservation at Gracewood....1st time he had ever been anywhere....cried because he was happy.

SIB4 - I worked GSSH

An most of our family did also at one time or the other prior to the 80's

In my case I worked unit 19-2 a few summers as a volunteer.
I may catch hell for my next comment, but 98+/-% need to be sterilized and many castrated.

We had a 70+ year old widow neighbor that was raped by one of the "kids" (he was 25+) that "got out" and over the cottages fence.

Also there is the GSSH dark secret about the number of employees that sexually assaulted patients and patients that sexually assaulted staff that was covered up over the years.

But of the 1500 or so patients in the early 1970's about 50 should never of been sterilized. These were the Socially Handicapped.

These were the ones placed in GSSH up until the late 60's, that were locked in closets or basements to hide their births or for purely evil reasons of adults.

Some sad history with GSSH & some happy history...most of the employees loved the residents & were very kind to them.

They were better off there than set free to the unknown & city streets.imho

no matter what a child does that does not give the mother or father or anyone the right to tape a child's mouth shut people need to stop and think what is this should happen to one of your children or you this mother does not need this child it needs to be put into a home where someone loves it and gives it the care that it needs!!
