Westwood Club Apartment shooting suspect had similar crime in past

An Augusta man charged with shooting an Evans man in the leg Monday was charged with a similar crime less than two years ago.

Columbia County authorities on Tuesday charged Trelon O’Neal Baker, 20, of Fox Trace, with armed robbery, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession during the commission of a crime. He is being held in the Columbia County Detention Center without bond.

Authorities say Baker shot Jamal Antwan Fielding, 25, about midnight Monday. Fielding told deputies he was on a bench behind the Westwood Club Apartments clubhouse when two men and two women approached him and demanded cash and jewelry, according to Columbia County sheriff’s Capt. Steve Morris.

Baker is accused of shooting Fielding in the thigh after he refused.

Fielding ran to his apartment, where his fiancee called 911. His injuries were not life-threatening, Morris said.

In 2013, Baker pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime for shooting a man in the leg the previous year. He was sentenced to a year in prison and two years on probation. Charges of simple battery related to an assault on a 14-year-old girl on the same day were dropped.

Morris said that two teenage girls and another man with Baker at the apartment complex were not involved in Monday’s shooting and that Baker did not know Fielding.

“It was a random act of violence,” Morris said.
