Interesting Smash and Grab scenario.

Must of used a visitor pass to walk in or did they storm the place smash and grab in a few seconds thus bypassing all the Theft Prevention in the store?

Either way a point person (female) was likely used at some point, I'll bet.

Last place I would have thought to be victimized by this type of crime. No place is safe anymore.

These thugs must be hero's in their neighborHOOD.

Seems this more common than we think

Just did an "oogle" of the net.

AJC shows an identical MO robbery in Feb 2014 and also at 7:40PM

Here is those faces.

think again

I wonder if these two geniuses realize that most of the jewelry in the counter at Costco is fake. The real jewelry is kept in a more secure location. So yeah, that $10,000 ring that you think you stole is probably worth 10¢.

jgriffin, That's interesting and smart if it's true and I have no reason to doubt that it is. Now that you mention it that would only make common sense and Costco's success is built on capitalizing on common sense. I guess the watches are real though.

Fake vs. Real

Since Friedman's went Regional Franchise, now I normally purchase my stuff at SHANE'S in Duluth Ga. But while I was in Augusta, I actually purchased jewelry for my girls for Christmas there and Sams.

Both 1/2 diamonds were real, certified and had good ratings @ under $400 each.

Costco had stuff up to 2ct at the time (holidays) many were good color IF, or FL and I1 rated.

While I never have seen any $10k @ COSTCO stuff they do carry $100K stuff.

http://www.costco.com/3.10-ct-Round-VS1-Clarity,-G-Color-Diamond-Solitaire-Ring-$99,999.99.product.11706433.html

Diamonds are a easy pawn once removed from the setting and the mount melted down and sold for its weight.

So it is possible the Smash and Grab netted 50K to 100K Retail or about $10k-20k+ after sold to a pawn or fence.

One thing for sure.
Since it is likely a group is doing serial robberies, they are making $$$$ and Costco does not put out 10cent items marked as real.

Besides such a sells tactic is unethical and Illegal.

Armed Guards

I would think these smash & grabs are rare for any given store. If you paid armed guards to watch the jewelry counters the store would pay more over the years for the guards than the cost of the stolen merchandise. It's just business.

GLASS

They make unbreakable glass. You'd think that installing that would be a no brainer for jewelry cases. Especially with the big bucks Costco has.

The jewelry in the cases at

The jewelry in the cases at Costco is most definitely *not* fake. Having been with folks who have handled several pieces in there, I can attest. Besides that, jewelry is not the same as electronic devices...you can't put a fake "casing" in there and have it look the same as the real thing when it comes to jewelry like you can electronics.

Pretty dadgummed brazen given the location, trying to get away in a rush, etc. LE has a tag number but bettcha either the tag or the car were stolen. Security cameras won't be much use if they changed their appearance in some way (but in many cases these thugs are idiots and can't figure out things like that).

Costco does not closely check

Costco does not closely check membership cards at the door. They see you have a card and they wave you on in. Cashiers at checkout look closely at membership cards.

So what happens when the armed guards accidentally shoot an innocent customer? They go to Costco to buy groceries and wind up dead?

Jewelry is just STUFF, and it's not worth killing people over.

Factss BTW

They should have realized they were in a tax allocation district... wait.... they probably knew... that's why they thought it was ok to do a smash and grab...

Right on, corgimom!

Jewelry is just stuff! Your car, your home, and your possessions are just stuff too! So leave your door unlocked and the keys in your car and don't bat an eye when you are robbed - it's not worth the risk of harming a criminal. BTW how many shoppers are killed by security guards in Augusta versus criminals? Please enlighten us.
