Man lying in roadway hit, killed by car in Barnwell

A Williston, S.C., man is dead after being hit by a car while lying in a road in Barnwell, authorities say.

Justin Stanley, 20, was pronounced dead at 1:30 a.m. Satur­day at the scene of the incident on Reynolds Road near Ashleigh Road.

A 1999 Plymouth “struck a pedestrian lying in the roadway” about 12:45 a.m., said Sgt. Bob Beres of the South Carolina Highway Patrol. The driver of the Plymouth, 25-year-old Christopher Neal, was not injured.

Stanley died of head and chest trauma. A toxicology test will be performed, Barnwell County Cor­o­ner Lloyd Ward said in a news release.

There was no immediate word on whether charges would be filed.
