A Hephzibah woman who shot her boyfriend was found not guilty by reason of insanity Thursday.
Judge Sheryl B. Jolly accepted the plea in Richmond County Superior Court. Amanda Neeley, 30, will be committed and treated for her mental illness.
Steven Ouzts told the judge he knew that Neeley wasn’t in her right mind on June 12, 2013, when she shot him in the chest. The bullet narrowly missed his heart and he is still unable to return to work, he said. He just wants Neeley to get the help she needs, he said.
A mental examination found that Neeley was suffering from a mental disorder at the time of the shooting that caused her to be delusional about the circumstances, said Assistant District Attorney Hank Syms.
Neeley will remain hospitalized until the judge determines she can safely return to the community.
