A Richmond County sheriff’s deputy is on administrative leave after a child handling his department-issued Taser accidentally discharged the weapon, injuring another child.

The department’s Internal Affairs Division is investigating the incident that happened while the road patrol deputy, who has not been identified, was off duty, according to a statement from the sheriff’s office.

According to the release, the child got the Taser while inside a home and accidentally fired the weapon, striking another child. Adults were present at the time of the incident, and the child was taken to Georgia Regents Medical Center for treatment.

The deputy has been placed on administrative leave with pay pending the outcome of the investigation.

This incident should not be

This incident should not be taken lightly. This incident could have blinded the child if he had been struck in the eye(s) with the prongs. Every LEO should secure all of their equipment.

My opinion only

The deputy should be suspended for several days (3 or 4) for not securing his department issued equipment!! Absolutely, this could have been FAR worse!! I imagine that his taser is attached to his duty belt; as most are!! I also imagine he doesn't remove the taser from the belt when he gets home; just secures the entire belt, as I and most other deputies do!!

There is something else on that belt that could have ended this story in tragedy and that's the firearm!! You've GOT to properly secure that duty belt when you're at home; especially when you know children are there!! I don't think this deserves firing, but definitely punishment.

Kids act like kids, I'm sure

Kids act like kids, I'm sure the child was told "Never ever touch Daddy's gun" but nothing was ever said about the Taser...and kids are curious.

Appropriate for the situation

Everyone sooner or later has an oversight.
The suspension will re-enforce the deputies proper care and securing of his weapon.

Justice served

Maybe the other kid deserved it, possible he was caught with his hand in the cookie jar.
Bet this never happens again, lets give him/her a break.
