Shannon Levi Grier was pronounced dead about 6:20 a.m. after suffering “probable multiple sharp force trauma,” Richmond County Chief Deputy Coroner Kenneth Boose said in an e-mail.

An altercation took place between Grier and another inmate about 6 a.m., according to a bureau news release.

The second inmate has been transferred to another state prison for security purposes, though officials didn’t say where. The inmate has not been identified, pending consultation with District Attorney Ashley Wright,

According to the Georgia Department of Corrections Web site, Grier was convicted in Fulton County on charges of aggravated child molestation and aggravated sodomy and was serving a 25-year sentence. His maximum possible release date was in 2032.

An autopsy will take place at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime lab in Atlanta this week.

Sick?

How hard is it to fake an illness and get transferred to a state medical prison?

It would be good for an intrepid Chronicle reporter to file a GORA request and tabulate the illnesses that convicted criminals claim to have. I'll bet their illness rate is way above that of society as a whole.

the murderer will be exterminated, but I believe the liberal left will cry and whine and call it unjust punishment. Have you ever noticed how lefties believe every criminal should return to society but not in their neighborhood?

It is true

I watch the Lockup series and it is true; sex offenders, particularly when children are involved, have a target on their backs. It is also true that they go to great lengths to get themselves in ad-seg or other places away from general population. Some prisons actually dedicate pods to sex offenders to keep them from gen-pop.

So, I guess there is some kind of screwed up honor among thieves, murderers, and other scalawags....

Some Other commenters have seen the survey - I think Sean (the boss) can help you get rid of it. I have not seen it. You can email him if he doesn't see your question on here first.

You folks who are seeing that

You folks who are seeing that stupid survey thing are being pretty nice...nicer than I was. You have to go out and sign-in to the site. When you come back, you should be okay to read the entire articles.
When I saw this, I was furious! I thought the paper was making me do these stupid surveys, and I didn't appreciate it at all! Sent in an email about it and Sean replied telling me what I just told you. Apparently, they have some sort of glitch and only people who are NOT subscribers should be getting these surveys to complete...and that could be your issue also.

LL, most prisoners are sick

LL, most prisoners are sick when they come in. Because most- not all, but most- lead a hard lifestyle, drinking, drugs, smoking, criminal life, lots of stress. And the stress of being in prison exacerbates any health problems that they have.

Prisoners, generally speaking, have poorer health than the average person.

But I must say-good riddance

But I must say-good riddance to bad rubbish. Now the taxpayers of the state of Georgia don't have to pay to support this scum.

The survey is ours. We started that a few days ago.

Subscribers who are logged into the web site through Press+ shouldn't see it all.

If you are seeing it, you probably aren't logged in through Press+. If you haven't activated your account yet so you can log in, go here to activate: http://chronicle.augusta.com/subscribe/activate. If you have any problems call or email me and I will help you do it. sean.moores@augustachronicle.com 706-823-3448

If you have activated your account and already have a Press+ password, here are instructions to log in:

Go to http://chronicle.augusta.com/subscribe, click "SUBSCRIBE" in the "Digital only" column.

When the Press+ window pops up, click the "SIGN IN" tab in the top right corner and to log in with email address and Press+ password.

That should set a persistent cookie from Press+ and keep you from getting the surveys.

Let me know if this doesn't work.

What Lilly said, it's true.

What Lilly said, it's true.

Excellent point, Lilly. And if they don't have it when they go in, there's a good chance they'll have it when they leave.

Just think of the opportunity to screw up the survey. How do they know I answered truthfully?

Can't say I'm sorry this sicko was killed. He should have gotten the death penalty for what he did in the first place. Justice served the hard way.
