After negotiating for more than two hours, a situation involving an armed suspect who barricaded herself inside a bathroom with her mother was finally resolved.

About 4 p.m., the Aiken Department of Public Safety responded to a home on Amity Lane where a female – armed with a pistol – had locked herself inside, according to Lt. Jake Mahoney.

“We received a call from a concerned family member and that’s when we responded to the scene,” Mahoney said. “Fortunately, one of our first officers to arrive is a trained negotiator.”

After the lengthy negotiation, officers made entry into the home about 6:30 p.m. and removed the suspect.

“I don’t have the exact details on how the situation was resolved, but no shots were ever fired,” Mahoney said. “Right now, our first priority is the evaluation of the suspect.”

The suspect, whose identity has not been released, was transported to Aiken Regional Hospital, according to Mahoney. The mother was also taken to Aiken Regional with unspecified injuries.

The mother was never held against her will, Mahoney added.

“She didn’t want to leave her daughter,” Mahoney said. “The mother remained in the home voluntarily.”

Mahoney said the investigation is ongoing, and additional information is forthcoming.
