Augusta man sentenced to life in prison for rape of 9-year-old girl

Warren Colbert was sentenced to life in prison for rape, three counts of aggravated child molestation and aggravated sexual battery. Colbert was not registered as a sex offender though he was convicted in 1999 for sexually assaulting two other children.

An Augusta man pleaded guilty Wednesday to raping a 9-year-old girl.

Warren Colbert, 51, was sentenced to life in prison for his crimes: rape, three counts of aggravated child molestation and aggravated sexual battery. Colbert pleaded guilty in Richmond County Superior Court. Judge James G. Blanchard Jr. accepted the plea negotiation and sentenced Colbert.

Colbert was arrested in September after a mother learned from her son that Colbert had molested the girl. An investigation by Richmond County Sheriff detectives revealed Colbert had molested the child over a two-year period, escalating the abuse from touching to raping.

Although Colbert told the child’s mother he had served time in federal prison, he claimed it was because of a forgery conviction. Colbert served time for sexually assaulting two other children. He was convicted in 1999 and released from a federal prison in January 2006.

Colbert had not been placed on the Georgia or national sex offender registries.
