A former resident of the Augusta Youth Development Campus accused of trying to kill another resident pleaded guilty Monday.

Daryl Gordon, 17, was sentenced to 20 years in prison Monday for attempted murder, said Assistant District Attorney Natalie Paine. Paine said the teen victim was stomped about 20 times in the Dec. 2, 2012, attack and spent 24 hours on life support.

The lasting effect of the beating could not be determined because of the victim’s mental disability, she said.

Gordon was transferred to another facility after the attack. He has since been charged in Chatham County with assault, accused of stabbing a guard in the neck, Paine said during Monday’s hearing.

Gordon’s attack followed the killing of another resident of the Augusta juvenile facility in 2011.

In late 2011, 11 employees of the Youth Development Campus were fired, including the director, after the Nov. 7 beating death of Jade Holder and a Dec. 4 sexual assault.

On Oct. 19, 2012, five teenagers escaped from the detention center, allegedly stole a car and were chased by sheriff’s deputies before the teen driver crashed. The director of the detention center at that time resigned.

"Daryl Gordon, 17, was sentenced to 20 years in prison Monday for attempted murder,"

A couple of times in the past, other posters have stated that "attempted murder" is not a charge used in Georgia.

Clarification anyone?

Youth Development......what a

Youth Development......what a joke of a politically correct name.

They are not "youth" as the image that term normally conjures up in our brains. These are ALL simply age challenged murders, robbers, and rapists who know, or knew, EXACTLY what they were doing.

And they are not "developing" anything down there. They are merely warehousing them and preparing them for their next stint in the big boy's jail after they "come of age".

Juvi detention has become a joke. Stab a guard in the neck. When is his trial for that crime? Just throw him in jail and throw away the key because that punk is a lost cause. Too bad they didn't put him down good when he stabbed the guard.
