Police are searching for a man who has been taking cash from the donation boxes at St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church.

Deputies were called to the Monte Sano Avenue church about 1 p.m. Monday where they learned a man had emptied money from the boxes twice since May 9.

An employee at the church, who is in charge of emptying the boxes daily, told police that the man kicked the boxes, mounted on brick columns in the lobby, to gain access to the cash, according to an incident report.

The boxes, which are labeled “Poor Box” and “Catholic Social Service,” allow members to donate money to the causes.

The employee told police he believes the man has taken money from the boxes on several occasions.

The man, who was caught on camera, is described as white, 45-50 years old, with glasses and slightly balding.

Theft from church

I wonder if that scoundrel went to confession after stealing the money. Or maybe he is not Catholic - either way - what a downright rotten human being! Hope he gets caught real soon - then, don't jail him, let him work it off at the church - with whatever needs to be done.

Suspect...

I suspect the thief is one of the semi-homeless men who hang around the boarding house on Central. There are some creepy types over there.

Probably the same low life

who stole my bow saw from my yard while I took a pit stop.

We don't live among honest and honorable people so much anymore, not even in good neighborhoods.

Really, corgi?

You can't figure that one out on your own? Does the word"redemption" ring a bell?

How about "supervision"? Ever heard of that one?

@ dichotomy

I like the sniper idea. St. Mary's won't go for it though. See comment just above for the reason.

Come on Corgi

Why would anybody want a thief to work at a church? If Jesus were here what would he do. Our church had a young man building a small storage building for us. He got greedy and took off with the funds before completing the job. The preacher said he would not press charges because the individual had more problems because he stole God's money. Three weeks later the kid shows up at church. He studied hard and became a Christian. Fast forward 10 years. He is still with us and is head of our prison ministry where he has saved over 100 young men. Yes some went back to the old ways, but God had a plan for this young man
