A former Teacher of the Year at Burke County High School was accused Wednesday of inappropriate relations with a student. It is the second arrest of a Burke County teacher this month.

Burke County sheriff’s Sgt. Dedric Smith said information was obtained after last week’s arrest of 25-year-old teacher Ashley Ashe that another teacher could be involved in a similar relationship with a student.

Police discovered that Debra Tanksley, 37, of Grovetown, sent text messages of a sexual nature to a high school student on more than one occasion.

Tanksley, an English teacher, was named Teacher of the Year for the Burke County school system in 2012, according to a October 2012 article in The True Citizen.

She has been charged with criminal attempt sexual assault and electronically furnishing obscene material to minors.

Last week, Ashe was charged with aggravated child molestation after police discovered she had a sexual relationship with a high school student.

PREDATORS

Let's see if these female sexual predators are treated the way a male would. Most are given much lighter sentences which is blatantly wrong.

People have absolutely lost

People have absolutely lost their minds.

And then they are dumb enough to send texts, so that there's proof of what they are doing!

This isn't new-just now it is

This isn't new-just now it is easier to catch them. Teachers have been molesting students for ages-course I don't know if molesting is the proper word when it is often consensual. I think coaches think it is a "fringe benefit". Who hasn't been hit on by a teacher or coach ?

Nothing new here

Certainly not to diminish the issue here, but this has been going on with teachers/students forever. I remember in high school a couple teachers were rumored among the students that this stuff was going on. Could've been true, could've not. We just whispered about it, laughed about it. Now that I'm an adult, I see the seriousness of it. The thing with kids, is they talk. Also, technology today makes it so much easier to do, and so much easier to prove.

Maybe it did happen in the past

But I didn't see it in the news like we do today.

It has been going on for years

I have been out of HS since the 90's. It was going strong then and now. It is just not "swept under the rug" now. We had a student/teacher relationship that ended in marriage shortly after graduation. Now people are being held accountable for their actions. It is a shame the people we trust have breached that trust. It isn't just going to affect the lives of all students at the HS but her and her children will feel the life long affects of her actions. This isn't a reflection on all teachers this is a reflection on a few teachers and their poor choices. I am sure the story doesn't end here and that it is just going to get worse. My prayers are for her children and the emotional turmoil they are facing. I pray the other students at their school show empathy and let them be.

Yep, it's been going on

Yep, it's been going on forever. Thank you Mrs. B. Heh, heh, heh. But a teacher has to be crazy to do that the way high school kids love to talk.

And if you know it

and don't report it you get arrested too. Just ask the Statesboro HS Principal. If this keeps up there will be more in jail for failure to report than for having improper relationships. Meet a teacher one night, put it on Twitter the next morning and you suddenly have a jailhouse full of "guilty" Twitter followers. What a world we live in.

Not Too Smart

Some of what has been said is very true .... this has been going on for not just years, but decades. There just wasn't an electronic trail of what was going on. Any teacher, now, who does this stuff knowing full well it could surface in days, months or even years apparently isn't as smart as they claim.

Based on In-laws in Burke county that know more.

There is more than a few teachers involved.
There are more than a few happy Jocks because of it...

Nothing knew

In the 70's we had 2 young <26 y/o female teachers,
1 Hephzibah High and 1 at the Jr. High, that did weekend parties or dated older High School male students.

Kind of a double standard because male teachers normally got boiled in oil for a hint of interest, while the males students were considered lucky.

HERE IS POINT TO THINK ABOUT
Given the age of consent in GA is 16 y/o.
What would happen if a teacher married a school student?

If

a president of our United States can have a little emotional release and nobody really cares, then why does some of our underpaid teachers have to be chastised for experiencing a little pleasure too.

Teacher of the Year involved

Teacher of the Year involved in student sexual relationship. If this gets out all the late night hosts will have a field day with comic relief. That's sad on so many levels.

America is in a strange state

America is in a strange state in dealing with sexuality. Like homosexuality is OK, and you can be a minor 16 and consent to sex-except with a legal adult who would be called a sexual predator, polygamy is illegal although it adds religion to the mix too, here we have a position of authority-a teacher so it is pedophilia and sexual harassment?, it all gets so confusing and makes little sense. It's a "thorny" problem. I think if a "sexual preference" is the justification for any legal privilege then because of equal protection under the law you open the gates for any sexual preference to argue they are being discriminated against-pedophiles will bring up age discrimination and they deserve equal protection to marry minors. The SCOTUS would have a difficult time with denying they are being treated equally. Course pedophilia is illegal, but there were slews of anti-homosexual laws that have been repealed in recent times.

What's the teacher who served

What's the teacher who served her time and ended up married to the student that she was locked up over. People will empathize with that "true love conquers all" story. This teacher should call the ACLU and complain she is being discriminated against-I bet the DOJ would agree and take her side. Why send her to prison when they are so busy getting so many people out?

Teacher/student relationships

Teacher/student relationships will be the next thing to be decriminalized/destigmatized by the left.

Since the left does not consider the scriptures, there are no limits with them. This poor woman is just victim of bad timing. 10 years from now? No problem sweetie...go ahead and get it on...
