Former Burke County Teacher of Year charged with sexual involvement with student

A former Teacher of the Year at Burke County High School was accused Wednesday of inappropriate relations with a student. It is the second arrest of a Burke County teacher this month.

Burke County sheriff’s Sgt. Dedric Smith said information was obtained after last week’s arrest of 25-year-old teacher Ashley Ashe that another teacher could be involved in a similar relationship with a student.

Police discovered that Debra Tanksley, 37, of Grovetown, sent text messages of a sexual nature to a high school student on more than one occasion.

Tanksley, an English teacher, was named Teacher of the Year for the Burke County school system in 2012, according to a October 2012 article in The True Citizen.

She has been charged with criminal attempt sexual assault and electronically furnishing obscene material to minors.

Last week, Ashe was charged with aggravated child molestation after police discovered she had a sexual relationship with a high school student.
