Aiken residents mistakenly receive marijuana by mail

Two Aiken residents say they were dumbfounded when a suspicious package containing 10 pounds of marijuana showed up at their door Thursday, police say.

The residents at the home in the 700 block of Brucewood Street said the U.S. Postal Service delivered the package, addressed to Mary Lu Smith, about 4 p.m. Thursday. A label showed it was shipped from a Phoenix address. The residents told police they did not know anyone by either of the names on the package.

One resident opened the package and found a cylindrical container wrapped in black plastic and dryer sheets. She called police, who took the package to Aiken Public Safety headquarters, where they found the marijuana.

Police say the names on the package were likely fake and that the box had been delivered to the wrong address for an interstate drug deal.
