An Edgefield mother could face charges after police said she assaulted a teenager who made a comment about her child crying in an Augusta restaurant.

Police were called to Texas Roadhouse on Sherwood Drive around 1:20 p.m. Sunday where they found 28-year-old Candice Bates sitting outside. Bates told police she had been kicked out of the restaurant after she threw another guest’s food on the floor and in the process hit the guest in the face.

The incident began when a 17-year-old Martinez woman told Bates she should take her crying child out of the restaurant. Witnesses told police Bates’ child, whose age was not given, had been crying loudly at the time of the comment.

The teen told police Bates came over to her table with her child in her arms and threw her food on the floor before hitting her on the side of her face with a plate.

Witnesses confirmed the account but did not specify that Bates used a plate to hit the victim. Deputies observed slight redness on the teen’s face.

The victim, who said she wished to prosecute, was advised of warrant procedures.

Bates could face charges of simple battery for the incident.

Some people have no class, no

Some people have no class, no manners, and think nothing of displaying their outrageous behavior in public.

A 28 year old woman doing that to a 17 year old.

Shameful.

I was there when this

I was there when this happened. That child was screaming, and I mean screaming, it's head off for a long time. The mother should have taken it outside. I'm surprised no one else said something. Last thing I heard was dishes hitting the floor and a lady yelling something about "my baby".

Disruptive, obnoxious children don't belong in restaurants

and the management of those establishments should address the problem with the party that is causing misery for the rest of the patrons in their vicinity.

Nobody wants to spend good money on a meal and evening out when the experience as bad as that caused by a crying kid whose parents don't know enough about parenthood--or give a rat's patookus about anyone else--to deal with the kid and stop the racket. They seem to think that because they've totally tuned their kid out everyone else can do the same.

About the only time it's worse is when you get that kind of negligent loser with offspring near you in a movie theater or at church.

Restaurants or Movie Theatres

...will ask unruly people to leave, ie drunks, etc. Why not this type of behavior? I have kids, and I can promise you they know how to behave in public. I can guarantee you if I'm spending my hard-earned money on a movie or meal, and this type behavior starts and the establishment doesn't handle it, I will let them know it, and leave myself. If I can't finish either, they will give me my money back, or I won't pay. An unruly person(s) should not be coddled while the masses endure. There's alot more money on the table with the masses than one troublemaker. Take heed businesses! As for the 17 yr old, sue the snot out of her.

Dittos to the critics. If

Dittos to the critics. If your child is cranky, can't, or won't behave; order takeout. I've sat through weddings, funerals, church services, and just about any gathering of folks you can think of; and have experienced crying or loud children at all whose parents did little to nothing to abate it. GET YO A DOUBLE JENNY UP AND LEAVE!

There is a restaurant for children to screech, cry, laugh, yell, etc. It is Chuckie Cheeses.

Teach your children

My children knew to behave in public and did so 98% of the time! but also knowing I could hit that 2% I went early so I was out of there before the rush. Twofold purpose, let others enjoy their meal and get your yunguns home and in bed on time. Also my kids did not get up and run around the dinning room, public or home

I didn't take my son to a sit-down restaurant until he was old enough to sit quietly and behave.

Because I knew that nobody wanted to listen or put up with him, if he misbehaved.

The world sure has changed, hasn't it?

This must be a really stupid

This must be a really stupid mother or father if he was there to let their child act like this. If I were the teenager involved I sure would take out an arrest warrant for this woman and maybe she would learn what to do if this happens again. A little cooling off a few days in jail may make her think before acting.

Hats off to the 17 year old

Hats off to the 17 year old for having the nerve to speak up. She did what most people won't dare to do. Glad she wasn't hurt. Candice Bates sounds like a crazy woman.

RESTAURANTS
Unpublished

I've gone to restaurants more than once and refused sitting next to tables of young kids and ask to be moved as far away as possible. Parents today ignore their children's bad behavior and expect everyone to deal with it as well. If a restaurant won't do something about unruly customers I'll leave and never eat there again. Another problem is people using their cell phone and shouting into it like the person on the line is deaf. Please turn off the cell or go outside to talk. We don't want to hear your stupid conversation while we're trying to eat.

Why "advised of warrant

Why "advised of warrant procedures"? Why didn't they arrest the woman? If this had been a domestic assault with red marks for evidence the offending party would have been hauled off to the hoosegow. There were witnesses. This was not a "he said she said". This was an assault that happened in a public place with witnesses. Why didn't the officers arrest the woman?

I guess if someone whacks you in the head with a bat in Edgefield and then stands around laughing at you when the police get there they would advise you of warrant procedures.

It wasn't Edgefield.

It happened right off Washington Road near I-20 and it was a Richmond County deputy that didn't arrest that idiotic mother for assaulting the minor who objected to having her meal disrupted.

What's up with that anyway? (Why isn't Austin all over this one?)

Shocking

I mean is this a surprise?? This low rent excuse for a mother did not have enough consideration to take her screaming kid out of the restaurant rather than ruin dinner for the other patrons, why would anyone be shocked she would hit a 17 year old in the head with a plate? I hope this child ends up in a good home at some point because right now it's future is bleak.
