Multiple police agencies continue to investigate a suspicious fire where police discovered a man dead and a woman on fire.

According to a Richmond County sheriff’s incident report, deputies were sent to the couple’s home at 3625 Crawfordville Drive in reference to a domestic dispute call.

Authorities said a neighbor discovered Karla Jean Harter, 46, on fire outside her home and helped to put out the fire. She was taken to the Joseph M. Still Burn Center at Doctors Hospital with third-degree burns to 85 percent of her body. She remains in critical condition.

In the house police discovered the body of Henry Jefferson, 51, as well as evidence of fire damage in the home.

Chief Deputy Coroner Kenneth Boose said the autopsy is pending toxicology results. Details of injuries to Jefferson’s body are not being released due to the ongoing investigation between the sheriff’s, coroner’s and fire departments.

Investigators say Jefferson’s death has not yet been ruled a homicide. They also say the couple has a history of domestic violence, and Harter showed signs of domestic-related injuries beyond her burns.
