A 14-year-old Laney High School student faces arson charges after authorities say he started a fire in a school bathroom Friday.
About 1:30 p.m., the student, who has not been identifed, entered a bathroom on the third floor and set fire to a soap dispenser, said Alfonzo Williams, the Richmond County Board of Eduction Director of Public Safety.
The school was evacuated while the Augusta Fire Department put out the fire. No injuries were reported.
Williams said his department has filed a petition against the student on a charge of arson in the first degree. The student has been turned over to the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice.
The school is contemplating further disciplinary actions, Williams said.
