Aiken County Sheriff's Office apprehends shooting suspect

Aiken County authorities have apprehended an 18-year-old after a shooting Thursday that left one man injured in Jackson.

Corey Fields, of Warrenville, has been charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime, according to a police statement.

The victim, who has been identified only as a white man, was sent Thursday to Georgia Regents Medical Center for a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Police did not reveal his condition.

On Friday evening, one of Fields’ family members contacted the Sheriff’s Office after Fields came to their house.

When deputies arrived on scene, Fields tried to escape by jumping through a window, the report said. During Fields’ attempt to flee, he received a laceration to his hand before running into a wooded area. Deputies took Fields into custody, then transported him to Aiken Regional Medical Center, the report said.

Upon release, Fields will be transported to the Aiken County Detention Center.

Thursday’s shooting occurred just before midnight.
