Aiken deputies put focus on deadbeat parents

  • Follow Crime & courts

In coming weeks the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office hopes to clear a growing number of “deadbeat” parents by featuring them in its weekly most wanted list.

On Feb. 24, the department issued its first Most Wanted Deadbeats list, which showed jail booking shots of nine dads and one mom wanted for family court bench warrants. Each of the parents owed between $27,000 and $30,000.

Sheriff’s Capt. Eric Abdullah said about 1,200 of his agency’s 8,000-plus active warrants stem from family court bench warrants. A breakdown of moms verses dads on the list was not available.

The term “deadbeat parent” refers to those who evade child-support obligations, Abdullah said. The warrants team is attempting to identify parents who owe a lot of money for child support.

Although most family court bench warrants deal with unpaid child support, other relate to a failure to appear in court or unpaid court fees.

“Family court bench warrants are really no different than any other warrants in our system,” Abdullah said. “The reason we’re focusing on them is to bring them to the public’s attention because there are so many.”

Unfortunately, he said, such offenders are sometimes a lower priority when dealing with warrants connected to more violent offenses.

“Our goal is to try to treat every warrant equal, but yes, sometimes we do have to prioritize when we’re looking for the more violent offenders...,” he said. “All the other warrants we try to address as soon as we possibly can. We try not to push anything to the side, but our goal is public safety and we like to get those violent offenders first.”

The warrants team is working to serve active warrants and investigate all leads on wanted suspects, but they’re also asking for the public’s help. More lists will be released every Monday.

Anyone with information on one of the wanted suspects is asked to contact the sheriff’s office at (803) 648-6811 or Crimestoppers at (888) CRIME-SC.

Yes, I hope Richmond County

Yes, I hope Richmond County does this too.

So many children suffer because the deadbeat parent won't support their child.

SUPPORT

Far too many are responsible for bringing kids into this earth that shirk that responsibility. Fathers are often not named so a woman can immediately qualify for welfare benefits. This miscreants go around impregnating woman and leave the taxpayers on the hook for the poor kids support. If a woman doesn't name the birth father she shouldn't qualify for any benefits and when she does the birth father should be help responsible for the child's support not the taxpayers.

deadbeat parents

Way to go Aiken Co. While we can all understand people go thru job loss and financial struggles . We must not allow this cycle to repeat and it really does . In alot of these cases it is apparent that the deadbeat is not gonna comply as a matter of fact alot of them are going out and making more babies that they have no intention of being morally or financially responsible for . this country is giving these deadbeats way more rights than they do the children . Hats off to Aiken county for taking the lead in such a important issue in this country !! I do believe its high time someone grabbed the bull by the horns on this .

If you're employed

the Feds track you down (there is a database) and garnish your pay. Doubt these people have any $$ to grab. Putting them in jail is counterproductive unless they go out on roadwork.
Insoluble problem, been around for centuries.

There is a loophole to what

There is a loophole to what you said Dixie. You can be employed "under the table" and the money cannot be drafted. That's the situation I am in. He works as a contractor, ironically for a security company, and therefore it is up to him to pay, the company is not required to draft his check. So alot of these deadbeats do have the money, they just dont pay and they know the law really doesnt care.

band together

because this is so far out of control and the amounts so ridiculously high this is where custodial parents must band together write letters ,call your state representatives , congressman , gov. the administration for children and families . Our children matter and have rights sometimes it seems like the deadbeat has more rights . The amount of money owed in Child Support is out of control . everytime they finally find the deadbeat they have to serve him and then of course he has 30 days to respond yes because of his or her rights ( again forget about the childrens rights ) but , by that time yes again he's gone !!! this country needs to realize if they were gonna comply they would be making some kinda payment . If you need to go find him or her to enforce them to pay you my as well take them in at that time .Currently they have revoked my childrens biological fathers license he is behind 11,400 .and I know some of you are probably thinking well now hows he gonna pay and ya know It goes back to when he had it he wasn't paying anyway and they did because he had rights warn him I bet if they lock him up he'll come up with his Child Support . Very sad that people need to be enforced to be responsible and by the fear of their own self being inconvienanced by jail time they are then willing to help care for their kids .
