Dentist convicted of killing in 1990 and 2004 files appeal

  • Follow Crime & courts

The dentist who pleaded guilty to murder in the death of his wife in 2004 and of an estranged girlfriend in 1990 has appealed.

Barton Corbin pleaded guilty in September 2006, admitting he killed both women and staged their deaths to look like suicides. Corbin, 50, is serving a life sentence.

According to his federal habeas corpus petition that challenges the constitutionality of his imprisonment, Corbin contends he was not fully advised of his rights before entering the guilty pleas.

Corbin further contends his defense team provided ineffective assistance of counsel because they did not challenge the legality of his guilty plea. Corbin also accuses the judge of bias and the prosecutor of misconduct.

In the case of Dorothy “Dolly” Hearn, 27, her June 6, 1990, death was classified as a suicide for 14 years in Richmond County. She was found dead in her Augusta home from a gunshot wound and a handgun was nearby. Hearn was a senior dental school student and had been trying to end her relationship with Corbin.

Hearn’s case was reopened after the Dec. 4, 2004, death of Corbin’s wife, Jennifer. The 33-year-old mother of two was found dead in her Gwinnett County, Ga., home from a gunshot wound. A handgun was nearby. The Corbins were in the middle of divorce proceedings.

Corbin had pleaded not guilty in both cases and was being tried in Gwinnett County when he changed his plea to guilty. The plea followed District Attorney Danny Porter’s discovery that a friend gave Corbin the gun that killed his wife.

According to the Department of Corrections, Corbin is in Dodge State Prison in Chester, Ga.

True Character

Just further evidence as to this snake's true character .

His association with the powers of hell are as established now

as the day he pulled the trigger .

If he had any courage , strength at all his appeal would

be to God , that he would not live one day in jail or anywhere else

if separated from Him .

But of course after all these years it is still all about " me " .

The human heart is truly desperately wicked and exceedingly deceitful .

" The dayspring from on high hath visited us to give light
to them that sit in darkness . "
( Luke 1: 78-79 )

This man pled guilty and now wants to change the outcome? He should have got the death penalty for two premeditated murders. Now tax money will be wasted on his appeals. Isn't the American justice system great?

I'm not a English teacher

I'm not an English teacher but shouldn't it be "The dentist who plead guilty to murder"?

Not an English teacher.

Either "pleaded" or "pled" is correct though "pleaded" is the preferred usage.

"Corbin contends he was not fully advised of his rights before entering the guilty pleas. Corbin further contends his defense team provided ineffective assistance of counsel because they did not challenge the legality of his guilty plea. Corbin also accuses the judge of bias and the prosecutor of misconduct."
Yeah, right. This is just a catchall, throw in the kitchen sink habe attempt which Dixieman fearlessly predicts will go nowhere.

"Corbin contends he was not

"Corbin contends he was not fully advised of his rights before entering the guilty pleas."

And so what did you think was going on? Trivial Pursuit? You want us to believe you were intelligent enough to pass dental school and didn't understand your rights after you admitted murdering these women?

You should have 10 years added to your sentence for wasting MY time.

A scumbag

I remember this in Gwinnett county...one of the saddest thing of all is her son finding her body...the son ran to a neighbor's house for help....the killer lied from the gitgo---the gun he used was traced back to a friend of his---his cell phone was picked up in hits near his house at the time of the murder--he said he wasn't there--he was....our DA did his job & also pulled in help from Richmond county to cover his murder of Dolly..

The family of this victim was racked with pain....they dearly loved the woman & her sister is now raising her children...

He should stay & suffer for the rest of his life. Thanks to the police work in Augusta & Gwinnett county..

We Allow It

We allow the scum of the Earth to plead guilty, to save themselves from death. Funny, they did offer their victim the same option. It also comes down to COST. Capital murder cases are expensive.

Appeal of Bart

I cannot begin to express how infuriated I am after learning that Bart has filed an appeal!! He feels that he was not fully advised of his rights before pleading guilty??? What about the rights of Dolly and Jenn? or the rights of the two boys? Or the rights of Dolly and Jenn's parents? He is a college educated individual...how can he say he didn't know his rights? The ONLY reason that he plead guilty was so that he would not receive the death penalty for MURDERING these two bright and beautiful women...I personally knew Jenn for seven years as well as Bart...how could he do this to his wife and children.....He NEVER deserves to be let out of prison... he should have been given the death penalty in 2006....he administered the death penalty to two wonderful women and ruined countless lives...what about their rights???? Everyone should rally and keep this monster behind bars...he has a pattern of murder... what keeps him from repeating this if he is ever released???
