SUMTER, S.C. — The South Carolina Highway Patrol says troopers arrested a 70-year-old man after he struck a person operating a motorized wheelchair on a rural road.

Highway Patrol Sgt. Bob Beres says J.L. Haynesworth was charged with driving under the influence.

Authorities have not identified the person in the wheelchair, who was hit by Haynesworth’s 1994 Mazda mini-van as each vehicle headed west on S.C. 49 about an hour after sunset Saturday.

A message left at a telephone number listed for Haynesworth in Mayesville was not returned Sunday. A spokeswoman at the Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center said Haynesworth was released Sunday after a bond hearing and did not have an attorney listed as representing him.
