AIKEN — An Aiken man is accused of shooting and killing his 71-year-old aunt late Saturday, authorities say.

Michael Lynn Thompson Jr., 39, of Clemson Drive, was taken into custody Sunday and is being held at the Aiken County Detention Center, where he is expected to be charged with murder, according to a statement from the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office.

About 10:45 p.m. Saturday, deputies were called to a home on Clemson Drive in regard to a shooting. Witnesses said they heard two people arguing, followed by two gunshots.

Police found the victim, Geraldine Johnson, in a back room with an apparent gunshot wound to the head. She was pronounced dead at the scene, Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton said.

Carlton said Thompson is suspected of shooting Johnson while the two were involved in a “family quarrel.”

An autopsy is scheduled to take place Monday in Newberry, S.C.
